Each year, Emory University’s Goizueta Business School recognizes two students for the exceptional leadership they have demonstrated during their time here. One of these students comes from the MBA program, while the other comes from the undergraduate BBA program. This year, the Roberto C. Goizueta Award for Leadership goes to Jonathan Ross 24BBA and Nick Brown 24MBA.

The Roberto C. Goizueta Award for Leadership is the highest honor a student graduating from Goizueta can receive. Funded by The Goizueta Foundation, the school awards this honor to two students who embody a love of learning; inspirational leadership; creative thinking; courage and commitment; transparency and trust; and excellence and integrity. The Goizueta Foundation established this endowed award at the business school in 2019 in honor of Roberto C. Goizueta on the school’s 25th Naming Anniversary.

Honoring the Award Recipients

“At Goizueta, we are preparing principled leaders to have a positive influence on business and society,” says Gareth James, John H. Harland Dean of Goizueta Business School.

Students like Jonathan and Nick have left an enduring mark on Goizueta. I can’t wait to see the ways in which they will continue to thrive and leave their mark on the world.

Gareth James, John H. Harland Dean of the Goizueta Business School

“We are immensely grateful to The Goizueta Foundation for their commitment to preparing the future’s brightest minds to lead business forward,” says James.

Ross and Brown each receive a $25,000 award. They have also identified a faculty or staff member at Goizueta who had the greatest impact on them during their time as a student. Each faculty and staff selected receives a $5,000 honorarium.

“We are proud to support The Roberto C. Goizueta Award for Leadership,” says Olga Goizueta Rawls, Board Chair and Chief Executive Officer of The Goizueta Foundation. “I congratulate Jonathan and Nick on their many important contributions to the Goizueta Business School community and their peers. Today more than ever, business schools must prepare students to lead in an ever-changing world. Jonathan and Nick have shown they possess the leadership qualities to do exactly that.”

Jonathan Ross Honored for Strong Moral Compass and Putting People First

During his time in business school, Ross has embodied the values of Goizueta. He achieved academic distinction in his coursework and served as a fellow for the Business & Society Institute. He also exhibited superior strategic insights by taking first place at two intercollegiate case competitions. An inspirational leader, Ross is a sought-after mentor, sounding board, and teammate, who shares an authentic concern for others.

While serving as president of the Emory Impact Investing Group, Ross created a new way to educate potential new members about the different aspects of impact investing. This ultimately led to the creation of an ‘early analyst’ experience for students. Ross took it upon himself to create open lines of communication with the administration to help adapt to new policies and procedures implemented for students.

Ross also served as president of the Goizueta Consulting Group. He and fellow club leaders revamped the group’s website and resources to better serve members. He created networking nights, casing workshops, and a mentorship program.

“In every interaction, Jonathan considers the weight of his decisions against what is ethical, what is allowed, and most importantly, what is intended,” staff nominations noted. “What this means is that he asks questions that may result in an answer that he does not like or that creates more work for him. But his moral compass is always pointed in the direction of what is right.”

Strength in the Goizueta Community

Receiving such an award is an honor for Ross, who feels fortunate to have such a supportive and helpful community.

“I am incredibly honored to have been selected for the Robert C. Goizueta Award for Leadership,” Ross says.

During my time as a Goizueta student, I was incredibly lucky to have access to many mentors and resources. The students above and below me helped me to find my passions and community.

Jonathan Ross 24BBA

“Faculty like Professor Roberts have equipped me with skills and guided me toward resources,” Ross continues. “Staff members like Dean [Andrea] Hershatter have made Goizueta the incredible place that it is. They have all contributed deeply to my success and inspired me to give back to the community.”

Honorarium Recipient: Peter Roberts

In recognition for his mentorship, Ross selected Peter Roberts to receive one of this year’s $5,000 honorariums. Roberts serves as a professor of organization and management at Goizueta. He is also the academic director of specialty coffee programs at the Business & Society Institute.

Professor Roberts has taught me the importance of utilizing my studies at the intersection of business and society. He consistently pushed me throughout college and my recruitment to consider how I could remain involved with social impact at school and after graduation.

Jonathan Ross 24BBA

“I would not have the direction I do if it were not for Professor Roberts,” Ross says. “With that said, his impact extends far beyond my experiences. As one of the founders of Goizueta’s Start:ME program and an internationally recognized supporter of the sustainable coffee industry, he has embraced impact and business and used his faculty to help hundreds of students do the same.”

Nick Brown Rises to the Challenge and Helps Students Succeed

There was never a doubt that Nick Brown knew how to take on a challenge. With a military background guiding him, Brown served as president of the Finance Club at Goizueta. There, he implemented improvements to the recruiting process, doubling the amount of investment banking interns from the previous year. By uncovering issues in the recruitment process, Brown created a more balanced evaluation criteria to help students succeed.

“Nick has always stepped up into roles and responsibilities to help his classmates,” fellow student Harman Lindsey 24MBA says. “Coming out of the military, Nick was very much behind a lot of civilian peers to start. That never stopped him from stepping up and being ready to assist and help his classmates.”

As an active member in the Finance and Veterans Clubs, fellow students appreciated his honest advice. “Nick’s character is unwavering,” Goizueta student Patrick Forrestal 24MBA says. “As a Marine, he learned to always stand for that which is right. He carries that ethos with him to this day.”

Sharing the Honor

Receiving this award is a momentous accomplishment for Brown who wishes to share this honor with everyone who helped him along his journey.

Receiving the Roberto C. Goizueta Award for Leadership is an extraordinary honor. It underscores the values and vision that Roberto C. Goizueta exemplified for Emory’s business community.

Nick Brown 24MBA

“This recognition is deeply meaningful,” Brown says. “It connects my journey to the legacy of an individual who profoundly shaped our institution. I share this honor with my supportive family, fellow students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the Marines I have served with. They have all greatly influenced my development. This award is a testament to the high standards of integrity and leadership we uphold at Goizueta Business School.”

Honorarium Recipient: Ken Keen

Brown recognized Lieutenant General USA (Ret.) Ken Keen, associate professor in the practice of organization and management and associate dean for leadership, as the faculty member who most impacted his MBA journey.

Lieutenant General (Ret.) Keen’s dedication to developing principled leaders to have a positive influence on business and society inspires all of us at Goizueta. His steadfast support for veterans and his mentorship have been instrumental in my personal and professional growth.

Nick Brown 24MBA

“His guidance has taught me to effectively apply the skills and experiences from my military service and MBA education in meaningful ways as I embark on this new chapter of my career.”

As a first generation student, Natalia Rosas-Villeda 23MAF understands the power of a degree. Rosas-Villeda began her college career at Agnes Scott College with an interest in public health, but soon discovered she wanted to learn more about the quantitative side of the field. That’s what led her just down the road to Emory’s Goizueta Business School. Rosas-Villeda quickly learned about the Master of Analytical Finance program, which provides scholarships for women moving into the finance sector. “Access to scholarships and funds can really make or break whether you will be able to go to college,” Rosas-Villeda says. “If it wasn’t for the Golden Door Scholarship for undergrad and Business Fund for Excellence for grad school, I wouldn’t have the very valuable education and personal success I do today.”

Because of her scholarship, Rosas-Villeda was able to fully immerse herself in the Master of Analytical Finance program, including serving as a social chair, admissions ambassador, and a student blogger for Voice of Goizueta. She represented Goizueta in the 2nd Annual Chartered Financial Analyst Atlanta Society Ethics Challenge where her team triumphed in first place.

While she continued to find success at Goizueta, Rosas-Villeda also struggled with imposter syndrome. As a woman who immigrated from Mexico, she couldn’t help feeling that so many others deserved this success just as much as she did. However, Rosas-Villeda says she now looks at her success as an opportunity to set an example for those she hopes will follow in her footsteps.

To be going forward with my education and a career and showing younger women and girls that look like me and who have the same background that it’s okay to put yourself first is a very rewarding experience. I feel like my sacrifices and hard work have paid off.

Natalia Rosas-Villeda

Rosas-Villeda had to overcome yet another obstacle after suffering a mild traumatic brain injury while snowboarding in Colorado. Her accident led to a battle with post-concussive syndrome accompanied by high anxiety. She tried to find therapeutic exercises that fit her tight schedule and rested as much as she could―but she continued to struggle with mental exhaustion. Rosas-Villeda worked with Emory Counseling and Psychological Services and a therapist two to three times a week during her recovery. Rosas-Villeda credits the tremendous support system at Emory for helping her complete her program, graduate, and begin her career as a healthcare consultant at accounting firm PYA.

“It was definitely a huge setback for me at that age and point in life,” she says. “But whatever I could do before, I know I can learn how to do even better, and that’s what I’m working on now. One thing that it taught me was to tell people when you need help and be okay with your vulnerability when you’re in a position like that,” Rosas-Villeda says. “Being mindful and taking a step away from the craziness of life, I learned how to enjoy things in the moment and save the problems of the future for the future.”

Lauren McGlory 16MBA loves to be “Day One Ready.” When she wakes up in the morning, her goal is to hit the ground running and make an impact that day. The Detroit, Michigan native studied psychology and history at the University of Virginia and had lined up a full ride to attend law school, when she made the conscious decision to pivot her career path and start working for Teach for America. Her two-year commitment soon turned into five years working in inner cities like Los Angeles and Washington D.C. “During that time, I learned a lot about what actually matters in the world and life,” McGlory says. “I was teaching a class of kids in front of me, and I had their lives in my hands.”

Goizueta MBA Grad and Alumni Board Member Lauren McGlory 16MBA

While she enjoyed her time in the classroom, McGlory realized she would need an MBA to truly be heard at the administrative level and to help make the tough decisions. McGlory turned to Goizueta’s Two-Year MBA program and focused her studies on courses in the Marketing and Organization & Management departments, knowing she would soon be entering an unfamiliar business world. “I felt like if I was going to enter corporate America, especially coming from the nonprofit world, I needed to get a better understanding of what corporate America is and how they look at things,” she says. “I also had an interest because of my psychology background. I always loved understanding why people make certain decisions and why people act certain ways.”

McGlory credits Goizueta with teaching her how to be “Day One Ready” and preparing  her for a position at PepsiCo after graduation. She now leads global strategy and accounts for LinkedIn Media Productions. “Whenever I have any doubts because I was a teacher and educator, and I’m next to people who are investment bankers, consultants, or finance people, I just think back to my time at Goizueta and what I was able to accomplish there, like getting a full ride to go to Emory, being the first female black student body president and graduating the top 10 percent of my class. It gave me the confidence that I never thought I needed.”

In her current role, McGlory leads a team that creates content to help drive people to use the LinkedIn platform, including creating live videos, episodes, and mobile studios where individuals can host fireside chats and panels. She says working at LinkedIn has brought her back to her educational roots and allowed her to make an impact and help others. “I landed on LinkedIn because I realized their mission is very aligned directly to my own, which is helping people and connecting people to other opportunities,” McGlory says. “I wake up every day and know I’m helping move the needle.”

Creating connections doesn’t stop with her day job, however. McGlory has also served as a member of Goizueta’s Alumni Board for the past two years in the hope of connecting more alumni to current students. “Our job right now is figuring out how to bridge that knowledge gap and making sure that all students feel that they are a part of Goizueta” she says.

Outside of her work life, McGlory loves spending time with her fiancé, Naeem and her Yorkie, Virginia. She enjoys cooking, baking, and making charcuterie boards. Above all, though, she finds relaxation and peace in her happy place—anywhere on or near water.

“The one thing that I tell people is just live your life,” she says. “Life is very fleeting. Adding any unnecessary hate, judgment, or drama is just overkill. You don’t need to do that so just try coming in with grace and love.”

Associate Professor of Information Systems & Operations Management Emma Zhang has long held a strong passion for data and analytics—a passion that led her to begin teaching at Goizueta Business School in January, where she quickly found a community equally as passionate about data science.

“What attracted me at first was the need and appreciation of business analytics at Goizueta, especially on modern topics such as machine learning, deep learning, and reinforcement learning,” Zhang says. “I believe efforts to have students keeping up with these new tools in analytics will really place them ahead of their peers on the job market, and I was happy to be a part of these efforts. I really hope to share my perspectives in data science and help students appreciate the power and business value in data and analytical methods.”

Although she has only been on campus for a few months, Zhang immediately found the Goizueta environment to be inclusive, supportive, and intellectually stimulating. Zhang has been continuously surprised at how far students will push and challenge themselves in the pursuit of learning.

While students entered my class with varying degrees of familiarity with data science, they are all extremely self-motivated and always up for new challenges.

Emma Zhang

“I have really enjoyed helping students building strengths and gaining skills and confidence in data analytics. This process has been extremely rewarding for me,” Zhang says.

Zhang received her Ph.D. in statistics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to Emory, she was an associate professor of management science at the University of Miami, where she also held a secondary appointment in the Public Health Sciences.

From Data Analytics to Alzheimer’s Research

At Goizueta, Zhang will continue to pursue her research, which focuses on developing new statistical and machine learning models, algorithms and theory for modern data such as high dimensional data, multi-dimensional data and point process data. Some applications include optimizing online advertisement placement and recommendation systems, understanding and forecasting user behavior on social media platforms, and modeling network dynamics in international trades amongst countries and firm-level financial networks.

Additionally, Zhang has been collaborating with peers in the biological science and medical fields to better understand Alzheimer’s disease, including identifying early onset biomarkers from brain images and understanding the genetic underpinning of the disease.

[Goizueta] has offered a great platform for me to get in touch with real challenges that businesses are facing and real analytical problems that they are trying to address.

Zhang

“These problems will motivate the development of new statistical models and methods. Goizueta has also opened up great venues for collaborating with other schools within Emory such as public health and medicine,” she says.

Zhang’s research has appeared in journals on statistics, machine learning, economics, and biology, and has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation. She also serves as an associate editor of the Statistica Sinica, Annals of Applied Statistics and the Journal of the American Statistical Association.

Outside of Goizueta, Zhang enjoys traveling, which she says allows her to bring new perspectives to her classroom.

“I especially love to experience other cultures through their cuisine and architecture,” she says. “Whether traveling for work or leisure, it always refreshes and opens up my mind and brings me new perspectives on work and life.”

This May, hundreds of Goizueta Business School graduates will walk out of our doors ready for the workforce. Continue to check out the stories of our amazing students all month long.

Growing up, Ria Puri 23BBA considered herself shy. Realizing her fear kept her from impactful conversations, experiences, and potential memories, when she decided to attend Goizueta, she crafted a new mantra for herself: do what scares you.

“If you go outside of your comfort zone, your comfort zone is going to grow to encapsulate this new experience,” Puri says. “The business program showed me that life is going to be scary, business school is scary, but if you do what scares you, challenge yourself and push yourself, you’ll slowly realize that your comfort zone just wasn’t big enough for your potential.”

Puri started pushing herself early on at Goizueta when she decided to double major in business and philosophy. She says the decision to pursue two degrees helped her bring a unique perspective to the classroom.

Ria Puri 23BBA

In addition to her studies, Puri soon discovered the importance of community and began pushing herself to get more involved around campus. During her senior year, Puri became the senior representative for the BBA Council where she solved problems within the senior class and helped organize events. Additionally, she served as president of the Student Program Council, which offers free events to all students across campus.

“When you’re constantly day after day programming to benefit student life, that’s something very impactful because you’re here for the betterment of the student experience,” Puri says. “You understand that everybody on campus is working towards the same goals. One thing that was very profound to me was being able to advocate with deans, the provost and student leaders about how we can make the student experience better for Emory.”

While Puri looks forward to moving on to her full-time job at McKinsey & Company in New York, she is taking her time to celebrate her final moments at Goizueta, something she says was encouraged.

“Something that the business school does so well is teaches students how to celebrate,” she says. “Through celebration, you build community. Goizueta does a great job of celebrating their students and keeping the morale up. That’s why I got involved…to help shape the culture. I wanted to help give back to the community through keeping the idea of celebration alive.”

Congratulations to our Goizueta graduates! Learn more about the celebration and register for Goizueta’s Commencement activities.

As the 2022-23 Sheth Distinguished International Alumni Award recipient, Woo Taek Kim 90MBA says he is honored to receive such recognition. Established by a generous gift from Madhu and Jagdish Sheth, the Charles H. Kellstadt Professor of Marketing, the Sheth award is given annually to a Goizueta Business School alum who is highly distinguished in their business, profession, or life’s work, and who has made significant contributions to humanity, science, art, or human welfare.

Kim is the founder and CEO of global media content company Next Entertainment World (NEW) and has executively produced more than 63 movies and 13 dramas, including popular Korean hits “Train to Busan,” “Miracle in Cell No. 7,” and “Descendants of The Sun.” Kim and his wife Mimi, also an Emory alum, continue to be actively engaged with the university.

“This award serves as a strong motivator for me to continue contributing to the global cultural landscape by creating entertaining yet meaningful content,” Kim says.

Emory has a strong history of producing mission-focused leaders across both the public and private sectors, and this award strengthens my sense of conviction to continue contributing to this long-standing history as a proud alumnus of Emory.

Woo Taek Kim 90MBA

Katie Busch, executive director of International Advancement, nominated Kim for the award.

“It’s the work that [Woo Taek and Mimi] have done with so much integrity, they are incredibly generous both with their time and their treasure,” Busch says.

We have alumni globally who are making amazing impacts in every sector of society, creating businesses and changing people’s lives.

Katie Busch, executive director of International Advancement

Philip Wainwright, vice provost for Global Strategy and Initiatives, says the award highlights the impact that Goizueta has beyond the borders of the United States.

“It’s a wonderful recognition of the excellence of our international students,” Wainwright says.

In the case of Woo Taek, he’s had a tremendous impact in a very important field as Korea is a center for the entertainment industry. He has made a tremendous contribution there.

Philip Wainwright, vice provost for Global Strategy and Initiatives

Goizueta has been a true home away from him for Kim and has continued to push him to pursue new adventures throughout his life and career.

“Prior to Emory, I had never left my home country of Korea,” Kim says. “To say that I was scared when arriving in Emory for the first time would be an understatement. However, during my two years at Emory, my friends, professors, mentors, and most importantly, my wife (whom I met at Emory) encouraged me to challenge myself to pursue new challenges and take risks. These values and memories have served as a compass as I navigated the highs and lows of my career.”

When Eric Daiter 23EvMBA moved to Atlanta to start his Evening MBA journey at Goizueta, he was excited to meet new people, start a new job, and take advantage of all Atlanta had to offer. However, his ambitions soon came crashing to a halt. It was March 2020, and the COVID-19 pandemic had just begun.

“The second I got here, everything went virtual, and I didn’t know anybody,” Daiter says. “I signed up to be the social chair and through that process, we very slowly started meeting in Piedmont Park six feet across. That gave me a conduit of exploring Atlanta but also the potential to make new friends. I would have never been able to develop into who I am today without that.”

Daiter worked hard to actively create a positive community, navigating the hardships of social distancing and slowly transitioning to in-person activities.

“I always wanted to keep a sense of inclusive community,” he says. “Everyone’s in this together, and we’ll move forward in a more positive way.”

Daiter’s outreach and willingness to help others didn’t stop with his classmates, however. While he actively worked to bring others together, his interest in contributing to the greater good helped transition his career when he moved to an innovation role within healthcare.

“Throughout my time in the program, I was exposed to people from all different types of backgrounds, culturally and occupationally,” Daiter says.

Eric Daiter 23EvMBA

I didn’t want to stay in what I was doing, but I also had no idea what I wanted to do. From the experimentation, building friendships, and talking to people about their day to day lives, I was able to build that knowledge and try to figure out my next job solely through talking to my new friends in school.

As Daiter looks beyond graduation, he hopes to continue to grow his strong community and give back to society.

“I think what I’m most excited for is taking our experiences both through what we’ve learned in school and how we’ve contributed back to the community, and then growing that in the real world,” he says. “We’ve learned so much in this program about ourselves, business knowledge, and community, and it’s about taking that and growing it wherever you go. That extra effort goes a long way to make other people’s lives a little bit better, and it’s always worth it. Giving back is always worth it.”

When a student enters any MBA program at Goizueta Business School, there is no question that time management will be a key factor for success. This was certainly the case for Daniel Refai 23EMBA. As a full-time neurosurgeon, a professor of neurosurgery and orthopedics at Emory University School of Medicine, and a loving husband and full-time father of three, he knew getting an Executive MBA from Goizueta would mean he’d have to make every minute of his day matter.

Refai began his medical career as a physician on the grounds of Emory University back in 2010. After graduation, he plans to continue practicing medicine, but he will now be taking on a leadership role as the vice chair of clinical operations, freshly armed with the skills he’s learned during his time at Goizueta.

“The MBA, for me, was an opportunity to improve my understanding of business and hospital administration, and look at leadership as well as team building,” Refai says.

As a physician, we’re really good at the technical and clinical aspects of taking care of patients, but one of the big things that we lack is the ability to communicate on budgets and finances, especially in healthcare. The MBA gave me an opportunity to really organize my thoughts and develop the skill set to be able to be an active member of the healthcare administrative team.

Outside of the classroom, one of the Refai’s favorite learning opportunities from his time at Goizueta was a global immersion program, where he not only gained a broader business perspective, but he also had the opportunity to bond with his classmates. Those relationships continued to grow throughout his time in the program, culminating in a partnership in starting a company during an entrepreneurship class.

“I think the group of people that I’ve met are going to be lifelong friends,” Refai says. [This program is] a unique opportunity to be able to be with a group of people outside of what we would normally be associated with given work constraints. They’re just some of the most incredible people that I’ve met as an adult. I’m going to miss being with them every other weekend.”

This May, hundreds of Goizueta graduates will walk through our doors ready for the workforce. Learn more about the celebration and register for Goizueta’s Commencement activities. Continue to check out the stories of our amazing students all month long.

Cedric Rogers 12EMBA understands the true meaning of hard work. Rogers says a strong work ethic and perseverance are values his father instilled in him, and he believes they can be applied to nearly every situation. Rogers held on to those principles as he navigated a successful career at Apple, before receiving his Executive MBA from Goizueta Business School and moving into the world of start-ups.

Rogers’ career at Apple started at the height of the company’s success, seeing the iPhone come to fruition and watching the Steve Jobs era unfold. However, Rogers comes from a family of entrepreneurs, and he was inspired by Jobs to build his own company. With the help of Goizueta’s Executive MBA program, Rogers took a deeper dive into business and gained key business acumen that would help him find success.

During his time at Goizueta and with the help of one of his cohort members, Andrew McCaskill 12MBA, Rogers soon discovered his new career path.

In the time that we were together, sitting in the same row, [McCaskill] kept challenging me to keep thinking about multicultural audiences and the impact that they had in the marketplace.

After graduation, Rogers created his first start-up, which gained traction with various organizations but couldn’t turn a profit. He ventured on to work on another start-up called Looklive, an app focused on men’s fashion. However, after completing a start-up accelerator program, Rogers decided to attend an entrepreneur residency in Los Angeles with Mucker Capital, a venture capital firm.

“That proved to be a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the other side of the table from the investor’s perspective,” Rogers said.

After a year in the program, Rogers launched his current company Culture Genesis.

I really had this passion to want to build software for multicultural creators and helping them maximize and monetize their content. That was always our number one focus.

Cedric Rogers

Rogers’ passion to make a difference is directly reflected in Culture Genesis as it helps underrepresented creators be seen on a larger scale, inevitably helping them grow their businesses in the creator economy.

“The one reason why I stayed at Apple for so long is because it was a company that was full of passion and purpose,” Rogers said. “You really felt like you were making a difference to change the world.”

I want to build a company that would do the same in its own way, and my ethos is to make a difference. If I’m not making a difference than I don’t really want to do it.

Culture Genesis has seen tremendous growth already, with the goal of scaling to $100 million in revenue in the next few years. As for Rogers, he is quickly approaching the 10 year mark since he left Apple, a milestone he believes coincides with the advent of his “ultimate success” for a reason.

“I think that’s the one thing I would always encourage young people to understand is that this doesn’t happen overnight,” Rogers said. “It is a marathon, not a sprint. It will be based upon your willingness to dedicate yourself. But in the meantime, don’t forget your friends and family, and take those people along with you because that’s going to be, a lot of times, the fuel you need to keep going.”

As the days begin to get longer and the warm weather returns to campus, an undeniable excitement fills the air as students look toward taking their final steps at Goizueta. Graduation is around the corner, and students are quickly wrapping up final projects and papers to begin the celebration with family, friends, faculty, and staff.

This year’s Commencement festivities will begin Wednesday, May 4, and continue through Monday, May 9. “I am so proud and humbled to celebrate alongside you as we welcome the newest graduates of our esteemed institution, and the newest members of our Goizueta alumni family,” Interim Dean Karen Sedatole says. “This year’s class has been faced with challenges like no other. Their resilience, resolve, and commitment to our school and overall community has been truly remarkable.”

Graduating students and guests are invited to attend the 177th Emory University Commencement on the Quadrangle on Monday, May 9 at 8:30 a.m. Attendees will enjoy the pomp and circumstance of Emory’s processional march, which will feature full academic regalia, the keynote address, honorary degree presentations, the president’s address to the graduating class, and the formal distribution of student degrees earned.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Tyler Perry, a world-renowned producer, director, actor, screenwriter, playwright, author, songwriter, and entrepreneur. Perry founded Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta in 2006, which has brought more than 400 jobs to the Atlanta area. In 2019, the studio held its opening gala and is now one of the largest production facilities in the country. Beyond filmmaking, Perry is known for his philanthropic work through the Perry Foundation which strives “to transform tragedy into triumph by seeding individual potential, supporting communities and harvesting sustainable change.”

Tyler Perry is a visionary creative force — writing, directing, producing and performing in plays, films, and TV shows that move, entertain and inspire. Whether funding scholarships for talented students, covering the grocery bills of elderly Atlanta residents, or supporting global disaster relief, he is renowned for creating opportunities and giving back to his community.

Emory University President Gregory L. Fenves

During the ceremony, Emory will also distribute two honorary degrees to Louise Glenn and Sally Yates. Glenn is a founding trustee of The Wilbur & Hilda Glenn Family Foundation where she helps lead the foundation’s work on cancer research, civil rights and human rights, and health and wellness. Yates is a former acting U.S. attorney general and former U.S. deputy attorney general. During her Department of Justice tenure, Yates was responsible for all of the department’s 113,000 employees, all U.S. attorney’s offices, and the Bureau of Prisons.

In addition to the main ceremony, Goizueta graduates from every program will celebrate all week long with smaller, program-specific ceremonies and celebrations.

“We believe business is a vehicle capable of delivering meaningful, lasting impact on society,” Sedatole says. “In this graduating class, I see so many principled leaders ready to solve the biggest problems of our future. I cannot wait to see where they go next, the ways they will continue to thrive, and how they will leave their mark on the world around us.”

Goizueta Commencement events are not ticketed and have no guest limit but do require completion of a registration form to gather important details. Please refer to the Goizueta Business School graduation and Commencement website for a complete listing of activities.

Like many students graduating this year, Thomas Heagy 22BBA quickly learned how to overcome unforeseen challenges that accompanied the COVID-19 pandemic. When many doors closed to opportunities on campus, Heagy saw an opening to help keep his classmates close. “The most common COVID-19 symptoms for a college student include the loss of taste, smell, and a normal undergraduate experience,” he says. “The pandemic posed existential questions about what it means to be a college student.”

Among many of Heagy’s leadership roles, including president of the Emory Interfraternity Council, committee member of the Emory University Senate, a teaching assistant at Goizueta, and many more, Heagy also served as president of the Emory Student Programming Council. “Leading Emory’s largest event planning board, I felt the spring 2020 lockdowns put a question to the Student Programming Council’s (SPC) purpose on campus,” he says. “After a quick reallocation of the budget, the council managed a new website that allowed for virtual programming to connect students to the Emory community.”

Connecting Goizueta Students with Virtual Programming

The new website received more than 40,000 pageviews from students participating in activities from approximately 70 countries. Heagy and his team also shipped thousands of giveaways to students to help keep everyone close and engaged.

While nothing beats our in-person programs, I am proud that we brought a little sense of Emory spirit to doorsteps around the world during the pandemic.

Jane Hershman, assistant dean and executive director of the BBA Career Management Center, said Heagy’s leadership enabled the SPC to virtually deliver key events, such as Homecoming, Dooley’s week, and more.

“Thomas is an exemplary student who leads with humility and good humor,” Hershman says.

“He has demonstrated an unparalleled commitment to serving the entire university community and to improving the Emory experience for all students.”

#MeetGoizueta

While Heagy looks toward graduation and will soon start his full-time job as an analyst in BMO Capital Markets’ healthcare group, he looks back at his time at Goizueta fondly. What surprised him most during his time, however, was the blend of competition and collaboration among students. “Professors must curve course grades so that a fixed number of students may receive each grade,” he says.

With the potential to breed competition, students remain caring and collaborative. This surprising, yet beloved culture of Goizueta serves as a reminder of the importance of building relationships and serving others even within a competitive business landscape.

Even while most of his business school experience was virtual, he was able to establish meaningful relationships, including one with Associate Professor of Finance Jeffrey Rosensweig. “As the business landscape constantly changes, Professor Rosensweig also must perpetually tweak his lectures,” he says of the director of The Robson Program for Business, Public Policy, and Government. “Students feel confident in his ability to provide this important and timely information because his brilliance comes across clearly in the classroom.”

When Heagy isn’t working closely with classmates or professors, he enjoys traveling and exploring new cities through culture and cuisine. As for the future, he hopes to not only earn an additional degree but also open a restaurant as a passion project.

Stay globally connected with the 23,000 other Goizueta alumni in your network. Update your contact information, share a class note, or attend events, virtual or in person.
