To honor and recognize Goizueta alumni for their profound contributions to both the business school and to society, Goizueta annually selects honorees to receive awards that showcase extraordinary members of the Goizueta family.

Goizueta Alumni Board member Ted Kim 97BBA led the May 10 celebration ceremony for Goizueta to recognize the 2022 alumni award recipients. Interim John H. Harland Dean Karen Sedatole noted during the event, “It has been a highlight of my career and honor of a lifetime serving as interim dean for the past two years. One of the best parts of my job has been meeting and working with our outstanding alumni.”

Nominators shared videotaped messages during the awards presentation, and recipients addressed the audience.

You each are an inspiration. It makes me very proud to be an alum of this great school. We received dozens of nominations for these awards, and you all rose to the top representing the very best of our alumni. We are very pleased to be able to recognize you tonight.

Ted Kim 97BBA to the award recipients

Weiner came to Emory as a Goizueta Scholar and graduated from the BBA program with highest distinction in 2015. Passionate about the extra-curricular experience, he served as president of the undergraduate student-managed investment fund and was founder and chair of the Goizueta Finance Group. For someone tasked with the advancement of higher education, sometimes the advancement of that career involves a change of focus. Dillon Boggs spent his early career in Power Five athletic development but now manages the major gifts team focused on academic development for Goizueta Business School at Emory University.

Born in Marietta, GA, moving from the University of Miami to Emory in 2020 represented a homecoming for Boggs, the managing director of development for Alumni Advancement and Engagement. His role is to be out in the Atlanta-area and South Florida community meeting with alumni to share the unique engagement opportunities for Goizueta graduates while also advocating for philanthropic support to bolster school strategic priorities.

Boggs was drawn to advancement based on the opportunities he was afforded through athletics and a study abroad trip, both funded by alumni. “So, the light bulb turned on. Why would I not do this for the rest of my life and give future generations the same chances that I had?”

The Purer Form of Philanthropy

Dillon Boggs, number 11 in the front row, with his basketball team at Georgetown College.

After four years as a collegiate basketball athlete, Boggs wanted to work in sports but was unsure if he wanted to pursue a career in coaching. Fortunately, he was exposed to the world of fundraising and development in higher education by Elizabeth Briggs, the spouse of one of his coaches, Chris Briggs, at Georgetown College in Kentucky. This introduction led to an internship at the University of Kentucky.

After a year of athletic development at the University of Virginia under Dirk Katstra, executive director of the Virginia Athletics Foundation, he worked for the University of Miami with the Hurricane Club. It was while working full-time at Miami that Boggs earned his master’s degree in sports administration and then shifted focus from athletics to academic development. “At that point in my career, I had a solid understanding of athletic development, but I wanted to be more well-rounded,” he explains. “I pivoted to gain exposure to the academic side of the house.”

Dillon Boggs on the links with his grandfather.

Boggs describes his time in athletics as fast-paced, often in the “limelight” at games and events while supporting student-athletes. Academic fundraising, by contrast, tends to be less transactional and can reflect a purer form of philanthropy.

I am fortunate to work with so many alumni that want to give because of their time on Emory’s campus, the value of their Goizueta degree, the relationships they’ve kept with faculty and classmates, and how the school set them up for success

Dillon Boggs

Boggs is active in sports, playing golf, and practicing yoga, though he doesn’t visit the basketball court as often as he did in college.

As a student, before transferring to Georgetown College, a small private NAIA institution in Kentucky, he played Division I basketball at Gardner-Webb University in North Carolina. In November 2007, Boggs experienced a highlight of his athletic career as a member of the team that knocked off college basketball powerhouse Kentucky in the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic preseason tournament. His team advanced to the semi-finals in New York with Memphis, Connecticut, and Oklahoma, and played two games in Madison Square Garden. Boggs recalled, humorously, that most of the pre-printed marketing and T-shirts for the tournament featured Kentucky, which was expected to appear. “It was the best kind of upset.”

Emory University has launched 2O36, a university-wide giving campaign aligned with strategic priorities. With an eye on Emory’s bicentennial, 2O36 will spearhead a movement to shape the future, providing access to transformative and experiential learning for students across its schools and colleges. Contact Dillon at Dillon.boggs@emory.edu, and learn more about Goizueta’s strategic giving priorities.

Graham Jaenicke 14MBA had strong roots in the entertainment industry when his journey brought him to Goizueta Business School at Emory University for an MBA experience that he credits with changing his career trajectory.

#MeetGoizueta

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Jaenicke hails from an entertainment mecca. During his undergraduate studies, he worked as an intern for the gaming arm of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment in L.A. and interned in the theater and motion picture departments for William Morris Agency in New York & L.A., respectively. This internship would later become a job post-graduation, leading to acknowledgments in celebrity memoirs, health books, crime novels, and even in a romance novel.

After sensing a shift in the publishing industry, he moved back to L.A. and joined an independent TV and film production company that produced shows for major networks. “While I was there, I applied to business school,” he says.

The entertainment industry, not just publishing, was changing and I felt like I didn’t have the business acumen or skills to articulate what I thought was happening.

Graham Jaenicke 14MBA

Changing Industries Often Demands Honed Skills

Jaenicke came to Goizueta to gain that acumen and used it to change industries. When most of his peers and professors were engaged in consultancy, he took the hint and joined global management firm McKinsey & Company after earning his Two-Year MBA.

Memorable classes that he cites include a blend of creative and strategic thinking, such as financial accounting with Kristy Towry, consumer psychology with Ryan Hamilton, competitive advantage with Kevin Coyne,  and entrepreneurship with Charles Goetz.

Jaenicke’s life influencers are many, what he describes as a “wonderful patchwork quilt.” Many panels of that quilt come from his time at Emory. “When I think about my life and the decisions that I have made, I can’t think of one with a more positive light than my experience at Emory. It opened doors that I didn’t know existed as far as my career. It expanded my network of peers and mentors and relationships in a way that was incredible,” he says.

Enthusiastically giving back to Goizueta, he joined the alumni board and serves as its president, actively participating in the mentoring program. In addition to board service and engaging in Impact and Day 1 Challenges with current students, he has shared professional opportunities for Goizueta students, hosting two interns last summer.

Presently, Jaenicke is the strategy lead and chief of staff to the CEO of Snap One, which manufactures and distributes smart home technology. “Rather than your mass-market solution like a Ring device or a Google thermostat, we sell to professionals who will go into a house and install complex lighting or shades or outdoor audio zones,” he explains.

Jokingly, Jaenicke thinks Goizueta qualifies as one of his hobbies. He enjoys board games, a tradition that began with classmates at Emory, and loves to see what’s happening in the entertainment industry.

Last year, Goizueta’s Alumni Board relaunched a program aimed at making Goizueta the topic of conversation among employees of major Atlanta area corporations. The program is led by Goizueta Alumni Board Members Rashida Burnham 14MBA and Qaadirah Abdur-Rahim 11EMBA.

Goizueta@Work, which seeks to expand, operates in nine corporations with on-site alums serving as Goizueta’s ambassadors. Participating companies include AT&T, The Coca-Cola Company, Delta, Ernst & Young Global, now known as EY, Georgia-Pacific, PricewaterhouseCoopers, branded as PwC, Truist, UPS, and WarnerMedia.

A long-standing program, Goizueta@Work was created in 2007 to actively foster an alumni community within companies where there is a high concentration of graduates. Few programs demonstrate the power of the 23,000 Goizueta alumni network like this one. Common activities at Goizueta@Work partner corporations include Fireside Chats, Meet and Greets, Lunch and Learns, and Happy Hours.

Corporations Unite Goizueta Alumni and Expand Professional Expertise

Max Francis 19MBA

Max Francis 19MBA serves as the ambassador at UPS, where he works as a product management senior manager. Prior to the pandemic, a favorite activity among Goizueta alums at UPS was an annual gift exchange. Quarterly, the group gathers during a lunch hour for 20-minute presentations from colleagues to learn what is happening across the company.

“The Emory community at UPS is top notch. Year after year, we onboard more alumni from Goizueta than from any other business school. As an alumnus, this equates to an automatic warm introduction whenever I reach out to someone for the first time,” Francis says. “It also gives confidence in others’ work and a shared vocabulary, seeing as we attended the same classes with the same professors. This allows me to quickly understand how my coworkers arrived at recommendations, and it gives me a sense of how to leverage their work to improve my own.”

Max Francis 19MBA

Events since the relaunch have been virtual yet have provided the opportunity to have program-wide engagement. Once past the pandemic, the program’s dividends will increase as faculty and representatives from the school are able to join the events in person, explains Darius Woody, director of corporate relations for Goizueta.

“Once we can visit the corporations, we’ll be able to more meaningfully engage with alumni and be able to partner with other departments within Goizueta, such as the Career Management Center and Executive Education, to network with the alums,” Woody says.

Darius Woody

The groups also bring exposure to Goizueta among non-alumni who want to participate, Woody says. This additional touchpoint with the Goizueta alumni network encourages those who might be thinking about continuing their education to further excel at the corporation or change fields.

“We provide access to Goizueta in a way that alumni can continue their education and learn from the meaningful conversations we have. From a corporate standpoint, Goizueta@Work allows our alumni to reach back to Goizueta and be able to promote these corporations in a way that is mutually beneficial,” Woody says.

Woody is actively seeking alums to become ambassadors to organize on-site programs and more corporations to participate.

Would you like to participate in Goizueta@Work as an alumnus or as a sponsoring organization? For more information, please contact Darius Woody at darius.woody@emory.edu. Learn more about the myriad ways alumni can remain connected with Goizueta.

Goizueta is one of the nation’s very first business schools, but there’s nothing old school about our programs built to challenge and transform the world of business and beyond. That’s why we’re consistently ranked as one of the best of the best.

Here’s a look at the new Spring 2022 course offerings in Goizueta’s Full-Time MBA programs:

  • Entertainment, Culture, and Media: Georgia is the fourth largest center for film and television production in North America and the Entertainment, Culture, Media (ECM) industry represents more than 6 percent of U.S. gross domestic product. Professor of Organization & Management Giacomo Negro will teach Strategies for Entertainment/Media, focusing on the framework for analyzing ECM industries with experiential learning bridging theory and business.
  • Philanthropy: Brian Goebel, managing director of The Roberto C. Goizueta Business & Society Institute, and Tene Traylor, instructor of Philanthropy Lab, will conduct an experiential learning course introducing business school students to the role of philanthropy in solving public problems with a focus on addressing inequality in Atlanta. The special topics lab will feature guest lectures from philanthropic leaders in the field. The course will lead to student grantmaking of approximately $60,000 to local nonprofit organizations.
  • Bias at Work: During this course, students explore the science of bias in the workplace and use that knowledge as a foundation for designing and assessing effective policies and interventions within organizations.  Instructed by Associate Professor of Organization & Management Erika Hall, students will also learn how disadvantage accumulates through policies and institutions, best practices for serving as an ally, how to conduct bystander intervention, tips for feeling included in the workplace, and best practices for navigating thorny issues.
  • Negotiation: Live training in negotiation is a component of Professor in the Practice of Organization & Management Michael Sacks’ experiential learning course. Students build a theoretical understanding of interpersonal and group negotiations. Being able to negotiate constructively is key to enhance leadership and craft the highest value agreements for a company. This practical knowledge also applies to negotiating job offers and home purchases.
  • Innovation: Managing Innovation teaches concepts and practical approaches to innovation management within established companies. The topics include managing and funding a robust pipeline of innovative ideas from inception to launch, understanding the essential concepts and economic models, and building an organizational model for innovation management. Our students are excited about the innovation strategy course because it gives them state-of-the-art, highly practical training in how to manage innovation inside large, incumbent businesses. Most MBAs go to work for large corporations, not start companies as entrepreneurs, yet business programs tend to focus largely on entrepreneurship,” says Associate Professor in the Practice of Organization & Management Renee Dye
  • Corporate Strategy: Dye will also instruct Corporate Strategy on the concepts and practical skills in corporate portfolio management. The course will introduce students to the basics of corporate financial structure and governance, restructuring and bankruptcy, and how to apply the core principles of U.S. antitrust legislation.
  • Emotional Intelligence: Leading with Emotional Intelligence, a January accelerated “ACE” course, allows students to delve into the topic as a method of leadership development by focusing on self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, and organizational networking. Professor in the Practice of Organization & Management Karl Kuhnert will focus on the principles of effective interpersonal communication to address conflict in professional settings.
  • Entrepreneurship: Charlie Goetz, senior lecturer of Organization & Management, will instruct Introduction to Entrepreneurship, covering all essential steps in building a new venture prior to its launch in the market. The follow-up course Applied Entrepreneurship focuses on the process of managing, growing, and handling issues related to implementing an entrepreneurial venture after the launch of the business in the market.

Courtnay Oddman 23EvMBA knows feedback is a gift. In fact, she has been so appreciative of sound advice from alumni that she’s back for seconds. She sees herself continuing to advance her career after obtaining her MBA and credits her mentors in the Goizueta Student-Alumni Mentor Program for their guidance on how best to accomplish her career goals.

Courtnay Oddman 23EvMBA

Oddman, an assistant director of training and development at Emory University, says she was initially nervous about networking with leaders in the private sector, but her mentor last year, Graham Jaenicke 14MBA, provided her with the tools and coaching necessary to grow and successfully expand her network.

Graham Jaenicke 14MBA

“One of the impactful things that Graham helped me with was career exploration. So, I shared with him my strengths, things I like doing, and projects that I find most fulfilling at work. He found people for me to speak with,” Oddman says. “He connected me with his network, to build beyond my immediate job and MBA world.”

Two Decades of Student-Alumni Mentorship Tradition

Co-chaired by Paul Towne 07EvMBA and Aaron Weiner 15BBA, the Goizueta Student-Alumni Mentor Program is a mainstay and two-decade tradition of the Goizueta Alumni Board to bridge the gap for students between the academic and professional world by sharing the insight, coaching, and experience of the business school’s alumni network. Alumni can participate from anywhere in the world.

Pairs are matched based on interests and meet in the Fall after the kickoff. The program concludes in April at the close of the spring semester. Participation is rising, with more than 160 student-alumni pairings this academic year, according to Jaenicke, president of the alumni board.

The couple hours a month that it takes to be a mentor is a small contribution that yields large results for Goizueta students, Jaenicke explains. “Continuing to drive the mentor program is always going to be a priority because it is a great way for alumni to give back to the school and build relationships for current students to expand their networks.”

Virtual Mentoring, Too, Offers Great Value to Participants

Tate Stevenson 22BBA met his mentor Bill Brosius 85BBA over coffee in February 2020 and has chatted virtually since because of COVID-19 precautions. The two are set to have dinner in person at graduation in May. Brosius will travel for the occasion from Dallas, TX, to Atlanta to also perform his duties as a university trustee.

This program has taken me outside my comfort zone, built my confidence in networking, and has been one of the best parts of my MBA experience thus far.

Courtnay Oddman 23EvMBA

Stevenson says the mentor meetings are not scripted or transactional. He cites Brosius’ stature as a health system’s vice president of finance, several years removed from the college experience, as offering great professional perspective. “Bill has had a lot of life and business experience. As I was recruited for my consulting position, I got advice,” Stevenson says. “Him acting as a sounding board has made my Emory experience a lot better.”

A Robert W. Woodruff Scholar, Stevenson is pursuing dual concentrations of finance and consulting for his degree and plans to stay in Atlanta after graduation in May to enter the consulting field.

Through the mentorship, Brosius introduced Stevenson to new professional opportunities, recommended course selections, and suggested the most beneficial club involvement for Stevenson’s skills enhancement.

As in the mentoring relationship shared by Stevenson and Brosius, Oddman and Jaenicke have also shared successes. “Participating in the Student-Alumni Mentoring Program is something I would recommend to anyone looking to boost their confidence and boost their network,” Oddman says. “The program has taken me outside my comfort zone, built my confidence in networking, and has been one of the best parts of my MBA experience thus far.”

Goizueta students benefit from the professional advice and life experiences of their network of 23,000 alumni worldwide. For more information on how you can participate as a student or an alumni volunteer, please contact gbsalumni@emory.edu.

This year, the Goizueta Business School Alumni Board appointed four members to its impressive roster of leaders, strengthening the team with professional expertise in social justice, marketing, fundraising, and business development. Driven by a strong passion for their alma mater, they’ve set to work immediately to help execute the board’s initiatives.

Joining the board this year are Qaadirah Abdur-Rahim 11EMBA, Lauren McGlory 16MBA, Paul Towne 07EvMBA, and Aaron Weiner 15BBA.

“There is a strong passion for Emory. Even before the official start date, Paul and Aaron took the reins and jumped right into the mentor program, which is a big program for us,” said board president Graham Jaenicke 14MBA. “Qaadirah leaped into helping the Goizueta@Work program, which looks to hold and establish relationships with companies and drive engagement activities. And lastly, Lauren dove into helping guide us through a strategic vision process.”

What Does the Goizueta Alumni Board Do?

The board’s purpose is to advise and work with the Goizueta Advancement and Alumni Engagement Office to promote close ties among alumni. The board is made up of alumni representatives from all the degree programs, representing a variety of class years, geographic regions, as well as a broad range of professional experience.

Abdur-Rahim is the chief equity officer for the City of Atlanta. McGlory is the senior marketing manager and senior associate account director for PepsiCo in Dallas. Towne, senior director of institutional partnerships for Resilia, resides in northern California and once worked for Emory University and spent three years in alumni relations with Goizueta. Weiner, who is senior director of finance for Bilt, lives in New York and brings perspectives of investment banking and financial technology to the board.

Looking at the new additions to the board, Jaenicke sees a wealth of diversity on the board from degree program to geography to industry perspective. “For us to be an impactful board requires that breadth given what we want to accomplish.”

Lindsay Topping, managing senior director of alumni engagement, notes the board’s priorities for the year include strengthening the Goizueta Student-Alumni Mentor Program, revamping the Goizueta@Work program, and creating a strategic plan covering the next three to five years. Another priority is heightening diversity and representation on the board.

The Value of Your Goizueta Network

“We’re always looking for someone to raise their hand. It is important and key to who we are as an alumni network,” Jaenicke says. “Continuing to drive the mentor program is always going to be a priority because it is a great way for alumni to give back to the school and build relationships for current students to expand their networks.”

Graham Jaenicke 14MBA, president of the Goizueta Alumni Board

“While the board’s strategic plan covers a long-term vision, the short-term need focuses on defining the makeup of the board, selecting and driving initiatives, and measuring success to assure we reach our goals,” Jaenicke says. “The alumni office supports the board to both execute on those near-term initiatives and define long-term direction.”

The board’s executive committee for 2021-2022 is Jaenicke, president; Jason Payton 12EvMBA, vice president; and Deborah Perantoni 00EvMBA, past president. Other members include:

•            Rashida Burnham 14MBA

•            Edward Dearborn 16EMBA

•            Kelly Fierro 07MBA

•            Eric Freedman 00BBA

•            Jason Harlow 10BBA 14MBA

•            Jodi Harvey 03MBA

•            Ted Kim 97BBA

•            Max Mayblum 16BBA

Goizueta Business School celebrates and recognizes the innovative thinking and drive of its entrepreneurs. Emory Business shares this inspiring student story in recognition of Global Entrepreneurship Week 2021.

Since 2013, hackATL has attracted thousands of students from top undergraduate programs across the United States to build a business in 48 hours and pitch it to judges, angel investors, and venture capitalists. The student-led Emory Entrepreneurship & Venture Management (EEVM) runs the event of more than 300 participants, some of them international. In all, 24 teams registered and 13 teams competed.

Winners were named and awards were given:

  • 1st place $5000 award – Team Clip – Devan Patel 20Ox 23BBA and Amaan Sayed
  • 2nd Place $3000 award – Team Trident – Artem Linde 25C, Silvia Lee, and Sungho Kim 25C
  • 3rd Place $2000 award – Team Eco Friends – Katrina Libera and Alex Diamantis

Marawan Elgohry 23B 23C, co-director of hackATL, says the best business comes from ideas that solve societal problems. He sees the competition as incentivizing the creation of products that solve a social issue and innovation aimed at real-world problems.

The 2021 theme was The Great Hacksby, drawing on the similarities between the 1920s and the 2020s, Elgohry explains, such as a global pandemic and economic challenges.

As a fellow in The Center for Alternative Investments at Goizueta, Alex Saladna 23EvMBA embraced entrepreneurship to launch his own new venture. For a 27-year-old who spent his career in computer science, Goizueta gave him the tools to begin thinking about creating his own fintech firm.

The Alpharetta, GA-born Saladna chose Goizueta for his Evening MBA based on the experience of friends who attended Emory and the program’s focus on business. Saladna admits he did not know much about the time value of money. “I really liked how the Goizueta MBA focused on financing and consulting.”

For his undergraduate degree, Saladna crossed the country to attend Southern Methodist University. While studying computer engineering, he completed two internships with Citigroup and later joined Splunk, a San Francisco-based data analytic firm traded on NASDAQ. In four years, he advanced from sales engineer into a leadership role.

“I had the chance to start a global team with my company, make a huge impact, and hire talented people from different backgrounds,” Saladna recalls. “Tech is very open to talent as opposed to background.”

With nothing but good things to say about Splunk, Saladna left the firm in late October to begin conceptualizing and strategizing for a yet-unnamed fintech company with two partners.

Experiencing the Power of Positive Role Models Who Share Advice

#MeetGoizueta

Saladna’s mother was in sales and was one of his most influential mentors. “I never realized it growing up, but the good business habits I have today were imprinted from her.” For his career move, though, he credits skills learned in Center for Alternative Investment courses like entrepreneurial private equity taught by Klaas Baks, professor of finance, and the Center for Alternative Investments executive director.

Absorbing the wisdom from former student guest lecturers who have bought their own businesses or started their own funds, Saladna realized the value of getting more involved with the center’s executive management team. “I respect the real-world aspect of the experience and engaging with the former students who attest to the center’s value-add to their careers,” Saladna says.

Klaas Baks
Klaas Baks, professor in the practice of finance at Goizueta and executive director, Center for Alternative Investments.

“I was working a full-time job and doing my MBA at the same time, but I will soon be diving into a startup and will have the chance to leverage my education, experience, and network to build a software company,” he says.

Juggling his future startup, master’s level classwork, and still finding the time to assist the center takes a big commitment, Saladna admits, especially when he forgets to eat dinner on class nights. For motivation, he turns to the famous idiom of author Simon Sinek, “Find your why.”

“By understanding that value driver, you gain a bigger appreciation for what you’re doing. Working, studying, and volunteering are big commitments, but if you know why you’re making them, the time invested is worthwhile.”
