Goizueta Business School’s Business & Society Institute will launch its first cohort of Climate Change Fellows this academic year.

The pilot for the Fellows program, made possible through investment by James Reilly 12C, recognizes graduate business school students who demonstrate both a deep interest in and commitment to building a more climate-smart world. Those selected as fellows will have access to hands-on education, exposure, and experiences to develop their capabilities as principled climate-smart leaders, whether full-time immediately after graduation or later in their careers.

As part of the fellowship, students will attend the ClimateCAP Summit in February 2023 in Austin, Texas, joining hundreds of leading students and professionals from across the country.

In a recent Goizueta Effect episode, Goizueta faculty and student experts discussed the climate crisis, greenwashing, and how climate-smart decisions can drive measurable growth.

After a five-year process of extensive review, a newly imagined Goizueta undergraduate curriculum will begin to roll out in January 2023.

The revised curriculum enhances our ability to equip our BBA students for an increasingly data-driven world in which the outcomes of business decisions are multifaceted and far-reaching. It simultaneously helps us build our student competencies and address their desire to create individualized and customized academic experiences.

Andrea Hershatter, senior associate dean of undergraduate education and senior lecturer of Organization & Management

The curriculum was developed by a faculty task force utilizing a design thinking process. In fact, both Hershatter and Jan Barton, associate professor of Accounting and a member of the curricular task force, previously attended a faculty bootcamp at Stanford University to learn more about the design thinking process, which is an empathetic, constituent-based approach to innovation focused on the needs of the end user.

While the process was faculty led, the curricular review tapped into the best resources for this information: current and former BBA students. They also spoke with corporate recruiters. The planning process, which began with a review of the existing program and ended with implementation this January, spanned five years from conception through anticipated implementation.

“Working on these updates was the best experience I’ve had at Goizueta in my 25 years here,” says Barton. “As a committee, we worked very well together, partly because we trusted the process we were using. Design thinking is very effective in assuring an outcome that meets the needs of those you’re designing for—in our case, our students, of course, but also their employers, our faculty, and our staff. Our new BBA program draws on all of our resources to ensure that we educate our students for lifelong learning.”

The faculty committee consisted of co-chairs Jesse Bockstedt, professor of Information Systems & Operations Management, and Hershatter, along with a faculty representative from each of Goizueta’s five academic areas and Marvell Nesmith, director of academic affairs and instructional design.

The overall approach and the individual components were all guided by the BBA mission statement: “To help our students grow, intellectually, personally, and professionally so that they feel enabled, empowered, and motivated to make significant positive contributions to the organizations they serve and to society as a whole.”

A Greater Emphasis on Flexibility, Customization, and Technology

Curricular updates strengthen analytics, provide more flexibility for building integrated interdisciplinary expertise, augment community engagement, and ensure that Goizueta BBA graduates are prepared for their initial job—as well as their subsequent careers.

With a new entry point that allows for enrollment as early as the beginning of sophomore year, students can balance their Goizueta courses with their Emory College electives, explains Bockstedt.

“It used to be more of a separate experience between Emory College and Goizueta Business School, and although we’re not changing the number of required credits, students will have the opportunity to take more of their college classes as a business student. The idea is that hopefully what they take can support their business learning and vice versa,” says Bockstedt.

The new curriculum also provides students with a strong foundation in data analytics; mini bootcamps to gain specific technology skills; an immersive, experiential capstone; and new interdisciplinary options in choosing areas in which to concentrate.

“I’m particularly excited about the new personal development seminar that includes pathway explorations. This will give students more exposure to different career options. They will get to hear from recent graduates about what their lives are like and what they wish they had known when they were undergraduates,” says Emily Bianchi, committee member and Goizueta Foundation Term Associate Professor of Organization & Management. “I’m also really excited that the new curriculum gives students the flexibility to build an academic experience that best meets their needs while still ensuring that they have the foundation necessary to succeed in any career.”

Students will move through a series of touchstone modules, including personal and professional development and a new BBA Boardroom experience. (Think Goizueta-equivalent of the classic high school homerooms.)

We’re being pretty innovative. The boardrooms are going to be a great way to build community, relationships, and network. They will really encourage cross-age mentoring.

Jesse Bockstedt

As part of the curriculum adjustments, the core requirements for students have changed. The academic core will consist of one course from each functional area of business, several of which have been completely revised. Students will then select two out of five flex core courses based on their specific interests.

In conjunction with the timing of the BBA rollout, Goizueta will offer a business minor to Emory College students who are passionate about the liberal arts. The minor will be comprised of the foundations core and will provide introductory knowledge in each of the five functional fields of business.

“Goizueta offers an exceptional undergraduate experience with extraordinary outcomes for our students. Our goal is to make the best of Emory accessible to all of Emory,” says Ravi V. Bellamkonda, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. “I also applaud Goizueta’s laying out transparent criteria for entering its BBA program, so all students and families have a clear understanding of how to access the school’s outstanding offerings.”

Goizueta undergraduate students are prepared, motivated, and empowered to make meaningful contributions to the organizations they serve—and to society. Learn more about our top-ranked BBA program.

Dean Gareth James

Our faculty push boundaries, providing new solutions to longstanding challenges and adapting time-tested approaches to solve new problems. Their research and courses make a positive impact on both business and society.

Gareth James, John H. Harland Dean of Goizueta Business School

Anna Errore: Assistant Professor in the Practice of Information Systems & Operations Management

Joining Goizueta fresh from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, Anna Errore holds two doctorates: one in business administration and another in industrial engineering. “I believe that at the cross-sections of fields lie the most promising opportunities in all business areas,” she says.

Her research broadly intersects statistics, management science, and engineering. Errore will be teaching Data and Decisions Analytics to undergraduate students.

“Today’s business students are eager to acquire many technical skills to add to their toolbox. These skills will allow them to support managerial insights and handle complex business decisions that leverage the possibilities offered by the ever-growing richness of data availability and analytic tools.”

Wei Jiang: Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Finance

Combine corporate governance, technology, financial markets, and institutional investors and you get a glimpse of what Wei Jiang’s research entails. Jiang will be teaching Advanced Corporate Finance.

“I am really excited to be a business faculty member in a booming city that is affirming its hub status for FinTech, healthcare, and entertainment. I believe that Goizueta is uniquely positioned to grow with the city, while supplying talents and thought leadership to the community and beyond.”

Matthew Lyle: Associate Professor of Accounting

Matthew Lyle comes to Atlanta from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Lyle’s research interests include valuation, value investing, machine learning, and the construction of optimal portfolios and investment strategies.

While Lyle was particularly excited to leave the grueling Chicago winters behind, he was drawn to Emory because “the university is committed to being a leader in machine learning and artificial intelligence.”

Lyle will be teaching Managerial Accounting and is devising new courses tailored to his research expertise, including a class dedicated to the ever-growing field of blockchain and cryptocurrency.

Rod McCowan: Associate Professor in the Practice of Organization & Management

Rod McCowan, a White House Fellow, spent the past decade running his executive coaching and consulting firm. His research intersects strategy, organizational change and behavior, and strategic leadership. McCowan will be teaching a variety of leadership courses including Principled Leadership, Leadership Development, and Leading People and Organizations.

“My professional purpose is accelerating executives’ and top teams’ development into outstanding strategic change leaders, which led to launching my executive coaching and consulting practice a decade ago and drove my desire to become a professor. I feel incredibly blessed to have the opportunity to teach at Goizueta, given the high caliber of faculty and students and how strongly my purpose and values align with its mission of preparing principled leaders who will make a difference in the world.”

Richard Berlin 92MBA: Associate Professor in the Practice of Organization & Management

Richard Berlin has been with Goizueta since 2017 as an adjunct lecturer. Before teaching, Berlin worked as an attorney and consultant. His research and consulting interests include leadership, leading change, strategy, organizational behavior, and management consulting. Berlin will teach both undergraduate and graduate courses, including Leading and Managing Change, Competitive Advantage, and Management Consulting. In addition, he’ll teach in Goizueta’s Executive Education program.

“Teaching is something I find consistently motivating because I can help students prepare for their future roles. When earning my MBA at Goizueta, I had the good fortune of being a research assistant to two professors in Organization & Management, Rob Kazanjian and Rick Gilkey. I remember even then being naturally interested in what they were doing,” says Berlin. “As an adjunct, I also observed and learned from Peter Topping and John Kim how to be an effective instructor. I’m incredibly excited to teach more courses and support more students.”

Ahead of its peer institutions in the top 25 business schools, Goizueta will launch an online Executive MBA program to complement its on-campus and hybrid EMBA formats.

The online EMBA will consist of the same courses taught by the same faculty as the other program formats but will deliver synchronous and asynchronous content. In the fall semester of 2022, the program will use The Roberto C. Goizueta Global Classrooms to connect students across the globe to world-class Goizueta faculty in real time.

The new program aims to expand opportunities for high-performing, senior-level professionals working both domestically and in international markets who are looking to expand their business acumen and leadership potential.

While the new online format can be completed without stepping foot on Emory’s campus, Goizueta will create optional opportunities for on-campus engagement. Online EMBA students will complete an in-person Global Experiential Module with their cohort as other Goizueta EMBA students do.

The Goizueta EMBA program is currently offered to executive-level students in both an on-campus format, which meets every other weekend, and a hybrid format, for which students complete coursework online and meet on campus three times a semester. Neither of these options is currently available to international students.

“This online format provides broader outreach and more diverse perspectives of thought for the whole class,” says Jackie Conner, associate dean, Executive MBA. “Enrolling students from all over the world is extremely valuable to our faculty, to our alumni base, and to the overall Goizueta community. We strongly value their perceptions, opinions, and perspectives, especially at a global level.”

Conversations about the program started prior to the pandemic; however, the major shifts resulting from COVID-19 catapulted the discussion to a new level and underscored the advantages, such as reach and flexibility, of conducting advanced learning online.

The Roberto C. Goizueta Global Classrooms combine the best of digital learning and teaching technology, enabling faculty to be highly responsive and flexible with students—through real-time polls that gauge the “temperature of the room,” breakout room options for small group discuss, whiteboard technology, and engagement analytics.

“It’s history in the making,” Conner says. “What sets us apart from our competitors is our global classroom technology and our world-renowned faculty.”

Goizueta’s Common Read program provides a forum for self-education and a safe space for honest dialogue for those seeking to be allies. Through books, faculty, staff, alumni, and students explore a range of topics including understanding stereotypes and unconscious bias, becoming effective allies, and developing anti-racism mindsets. The current common read is “The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together” by Heather McGhee who will join an Emory-wide virtual community event on November 10, 2021. The Common Read program is managed by Goizueta’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee.

Ash Meenakumari Shankar 23BBA chose Goizueta Business School to prepare himself to create more equity for people of color in business. In his view, business leaders have been too comfortable with the status quo and look for convenient solutions to problems.

“I fundamentally believe that businesses have the ability to create lasting equity,” Shankar said. “This book brings up the uncomfortable and inconvenient questions that we in business need to confront.”

“The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together” by Heather McGhee
“The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together” by Heather McGhee

Shankar is among the 300 Goizueta students, staff, and faculty who are reading and discussing the bestselling The Sum of Us.

“This shared reading has only reminded me of why I chose Goizueta,” Shankar said. “I am so glad that McGhee’s message has been received positively here. The classes and resources we have at Goizueta are working to remove these barriers. With greater knowledge and dialogue, we can create permanent equity at Emory and in the Atlanta community.”

McGhee’s book explores themes that demonstrate the communal, global benefits when people come together across race to build an equitable future. The November 10 event, “The Sum of Us: An Emory Community Conversation with Heather McGhee,” is free and open to all in the Emory community including students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community partners.

Common Read Program Draws Campus-Wide Participation

Lead organizer Allison Kays, assistant professor in the practice of accounting, said 100 Goizueta students, professors, and staff are in the small groups, and another 200 are reading the book on their own. Of the 300 readers, 32 are faculty, 61 are staff, and the rest are students.

The Sum of Us - Goizueta Small Group Discussions
The Sum of Us – Goizueta Small Group Discussions

“I’m encouraged and excited by the response across the business school, from BBAs to the deans,” said Ama Ampadu-Fofie, director of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

“We’re having discussions as a family, treating each other as family, and creating spaces to have sensitive conversations together. That’s what I wanted us to walk away with: open gateways to have difficult and uncomfortable experiences with people who look different from each of us. I want you to know about my experience and I want to know about yours.”

Ama Ampadu-Fofie, director of diversity, equity, and inclusion

Principled leadership, diversity and equity were priorities when Jesse Conyers 24EvMBA chose her graduate program. Her most meaningful experience with her student cohort has been the book and discussion group.

“Participating in this common read on racial injustice in America affirms my decision to choose Goizueta,” said Conyers, an Emory physician radiologist.

“I have gained a deeper understanding of the history of structural racial hierarchy in America, the zero-sum mentality that frames and perpetuates these systems and the impact on contemporary racial inequality. I have learned from the unique and shared experiences of my colleagues and gained an understanding of the systemic impact of racism and discussed potential solutions. We consider how, as McGhee writes, to become strategic partners in the fight for a racially just America.”

Jesse Conyers 24EvMBA

Discussions Deepen as Perspectives are Shared

For Goizueta faculty and staff, The Sum of Us follows their fall 2020 reading of Whistling Vivaldi: How Stereotypes Affect Us and What We Can Do. Kays teamed with Brian Goebel, managing director of The Roberto C. Goizueta Business & Society Institute, Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Ken Keen, senior lecturer of organization and management and associate dean for leadership, Brian C. Mitchell, associate dean for full-time MBA programs and Goizueta Global Strategy and Initiatives, and Melissa Rapp, associate dean of MBA admissions, to choose The Sum of Us, and secure sponsorships from Emory Advancement and Alumni Engagement, Emory Global Health Institute, Emory Law, Laney Graduate School, Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, and Emory School of Medicine.

The zero-sum paradigm was a key discussion point for Maya Caron 23BBA. “Just because one government program helps a certain population does not mean that it takes away any opportunities from someone else,” she said. “It was insightful hearing from everyone in our diverse group. We all valued and acknowledged our differences.”

Chris Weakley 22BBA, a former Army explosive ordinance disposal officer, shared his experiences growing up in southern California.

“Being a little bit older than most of my classmates, I’ve been exposed to a little bit more of history,” he said. “I specifically talked about the 1992 riots after four policemen were acquitted of beating Rodney King. For me, the discussion was an eye-opening juxtaposition between Jim Crow era laws, the Los Angeles riots, recent police brutality headlines, and reading The Sum of Us.”

The discussions have helped Kegan Baird 22MBA to his goal of personal growth in business school by meeting people from around the world.

“This initiative shows why Emory is such a great place to grow,” said Baird. “The book and corresponding discussions have taught me that it is important to dig deeper and understand the root causes of societal issues to ensure you aren’t unknowingly perpetuating any issues and are equipped to solve these issues and better society as best you can. It has been great to learn and hear the perspectives of others that have experienced these issues in different ways than I have.”

Sustainability over Shortcuts?

For Kays a main takeaway from the book is the powerful business choice of sustainability over shortcuts. She teaches two theories of the firm: shareholder theory and stakeholder theory. The former is the more widely recognized theory and states that the purpose of a firm is to maximize returns to shareholders. The theory relies on a zero-sum mindset and argues that if a corporation focuses on any other stakeholders, it is taking away from shareholders’ returns. Stakeholder theory, however, ties in well to McGhee’s book, which argues that there can be a powerful solidarity dividend for all when returns are maximized to everyone connected to the firm, including the employees, suppliers, customers, and the communities in which the firm operates.

“When you invest in employees and the communities you serve, that may reduce profits in the short term, but long term it should lead to higher profits because you are building more loyalty and allowing space for development and creativity.”

Allison Kays, assistant professor in the practice of accounting

“Business has a really important role to play in reducing inequities,” agreed Omar Rodríguez-Vilá, the academic director of education for The Roberto C. Goizueta Business & Society Institute. “Not just as business leaders in our companies, but how we look at the marketplace and to what extent are we paying attention to the needs of the communities we are serving?”

His discussion group worked on identifying ways to take action.

“There is definitely a point in the dialogue where it’s easy to feel that you don’t have power; the issue is so complex and pervasive, what can I do?” he said. “We discussed making that very micro: What can I do in my class? Do I speak up when I see issues? What types of leaders and cases are we learning from? When we left the room, I feel there was a collective sense that there is power in our individual actions.”

Applications are now open for Goizueta Business School’s second John R. Lewis Racial Justice Case Competition. The competition seeks student leaders to investigate how companies can address racial injustice within their organizations. The 2022 competition expands its leadership by including students from prominent universities across the country to organize the event and host the semifinals. The application deadline for student teams is November 19, 2021.

Partner universities include Cornell University SC Johnson College of Business, Rice University Jones Graduate School of Business, Yale School of Management, and Howard University School of Business.

“At Goizueta we know the issues of injustice and inequality are so big that we can’t be territorial,” said faculty sponsor Lynne Segall, associate dean for management practice initiatives. “We need to lock arms and be in this together, leading a broader coalition of university students to make a difference.”

This year, volunteer judges will select 20 semifinalist teams that will be assigned to one of five corporate partners. In December, each team will be given a case prompt specific to their corporate partner’s racial justice and equality goals. The students will then work to create bold, innovative and actionable racial justice and equity initiatives targeted to create lasting change.

“At Goizueta, we prepare principled leaders to have a positive impact on business and society,” said Karen Sedatole, Interim John H. Harland Dean of Goizueta Business School. “I am so proud to see our students and partners coming together to push for critical change to strengthen business and communities alike.”

Willie Sullivan

The John R. Lewis Racial Justice Case Competition was started in 2021 by MBA student Willie Sullivan. He saw dozens of businesses releasing statements on racial injustice and wondered what actionable steps were being taken. With business representing the most trusted institution throughout the country and globally, he asked, “What are companies doing to address issues of racial injustice?”

In its inaugural year, the first-of-its-kind competition had more than 500 students from 52 universities participate.

  • The winning team from the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business created a plan for Johnson & Johnson to use products and incentives to inspire one million Black girls to study STEM.
  • Other companies that participated in the 2021 competition include Walmart, Salesforce, HP, Southern Company, and Truist.

The competition is part of The Roberto C. Goizueta Business & Society Institute. The institute represents an elevated commitment by Goizueta Business School to explore how businesses can create long-term value, while addressing the social and environmental challenges of our time. The goal is to reimagine business to solve society’s biggest problems.

“Cornell, Rice, Yale, and Howard will help extend our reach to more applicants, new sponsors, and more people interested in the finals,” says Kegan Baird, Goizueta Business School 22MBA, who serves as managing director of the case competition. “It’s incredibly unique to have the opportunity to participate in or lead something like this in an MBA or academic career. It feels wonderful to take action and make something meaningful happen.”

Marina Levtov Cooley 14MBA

The course leverages the techniques behind screenplays to understand how Hollywood constructs movies, the science behind sticky ideas, and breaks apart some of the most successful marketing initiatives of the last three decades – all to learn the craft of storytelling. With the foundation of effective communication in place, students will explore how to create breakthrough content on the biggest digital platforms of the day, including Instagram and TikTok. Cooley will also teach a core class on marketing to BBAs.

“Telling stories has been a defining part of my career as both a brand marketer and a management consultant and I’m looking forward to transferring that knowledge to the classroom,” Cooley says. “Reading is my favorite thing, and the idea that I get to read and think for a living, to translate those ideas to students, fills me with so much joy. I can’t imagine teaching for any other school than my alma mater.”

After graduating from NYU Stern with a bachelor’s degree in marketing, Cooley worked as a management consultant in the Global Business Services division at IBM, where she lived and worked in places ranging from Richmond to Amsterdam to Puerto Rico. Soon after, Cooley left Big Blue for something completely different. She founded a natural food brand called Better Butter.

After earning her MBA in marketing at Goizueta, where she was a Woodruff scholar, Cooley went on to work as a brand marketer for Coca-Cola for six years. She then transitioned to be the chief marketing officer role for a Series B startup called Lavva, a plant-based superfood yogurt and lifestyle brand.

“I’ve been passionate about democratizing healthy food for as long as I can remember and I’ve had the privilege of working on several unicorn brands, including Gold Peak Tea and Honest Kids, which served as proof points that it’s possible to scale brands to contribute to a more sustainable food system,” Cooley says. “I look forward to helping students find a similar passion.”

Tonya Smalls

Tonya Smalls
Tonya Smalls 05EMBA

Tonya Smalls 05EMBA is a new assistant professor in the practice of accounting. She comes to Goizueta from Clark Atlanta University, where she served as an assistant professor of accounting. Previously she taught at Clemson University as a clinical assistant professor of accounting. At Goizueta, she will teach Financial Accounting for undergraduate students, as well as a course titled Accounting for Government and Nonprofit Organizations for students in the Master of Professional Accounting program.

Before transitioning into academia full time, Smalls served as an adjunct professor at Clark Atlanta University, Kennesaw State University, and Georgia State University while still working in the industry. She started serving as an adjunct in the Department of Economics at Spelman College in 2021, teaching Principles of Accounting to undergraduates.

Now that Smalls has joined Goizueta’s faculty, she will have worked for all of her alma maters, as she received her bachelor’s in accounting from Clark Atlanta, her MBA from Goizueta, and her Doctor of Business Administration from Kennesaw State.

Smalls, a Certified Public Accountant, has more than 25 years of professional work experience with an affinity for nonprofit organizations. She spent 11 years at the American Cancer Society in executive leadership roles, including chief financial officer for the South Atlantic Division and managing director of finance for the global headquarters.

“Now that I’m in academia, I can leverage my experience and give students my personal insight on how their degree, or their interest in accounting, can be utilized in a variety of companies or industries. Sharing knowledge is powerful, and just having those opportunities in and outside of the classroom is what I’ve found most rewarding.”

Smalls’ primary research interests lie in accounting fraud, behavioral and ethical decision making, whistleblowing, nonprofit accounting and financial management, and teaching and learning in the area of accounting education. Her work has been published in three academic journals and she was recently awarded the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy grant to research the factors that influence minority accounting students’ success in achieving the CPA certification.

A message from Jan Love, Interim Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs

It is with great excitement that I announce Emory’s search for the next John H. Harland Dean of Goizueta Business School (GBS). Dean Vikas Sukhatme of Emory School of Medicine will serve as the chair of the search committee, which began meeting on June 16, with the goal of having a new dean in place during the coming academic year.

Jan Love

Many thanks are due to Interim Dean Karen Sedatole, Goizueta Advisory Board Term Professor of Accounting, who has led GBS since May 30, 2020. While maintaining the high standards and rankings for which the school is known, Sedatole has also successfully led GBS through Emory’s COVID-19 response and recovery. Previously, GBS was led by Erika James, who left to assume the deanship of the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.

Founded in 1919, GBS has prepared principled leaders to have a positive effect on business and society for more than 100 years. Positioned in Atlanta, a leading hub for tech and Fortune 500 companies, including The Coca-Cola Company and Delta, GBS is poised to offer students a range of innovative first-hand experiences in top companies and in the classroom.

Agile and innovative, GBS responds quickly to the needs of its students and community. This spring the classroom experience evolved to the next generation with the installation of classroom technologies to connect students studying in Atlanta and beyond with each other and faculty in new ways, extending GBS’s global reach and eliminating the limitations of geography.

Additionally, the Roberto C. Goizueta Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation launched in response to student interest in entrepreneurship and offers more than 15 different classes. The Roberto C. Goizueta Business and Society Institute, which looks to transform business and solve society’s challenges by addressing inequality and climate change, also opened as the newest phase of the school’s social impact initiative.

In spring 2021, GBS enrolled nearly 1,000 undergraduate students and more than 750 graduate students. The BBA program is ranked #12 by US News & World Report and the Executive MBA, Evening MBA, and full-time MBA are ranked #19, #13, and #26 respectively by US News & World Report.

Members of the Search Advisory Committee—including GBS students, faculty, and leadership—will request community input about what they see as the most important attributes for the new dean and will arrange listening sessions to hear from members of the Goizueta and Emory communities. Dates and locations will be made available soon. We hope that you will attend and be part of the process.
