Celebrating excellence and dedication in academia, Emory University and Goizueta Business School annually honor their most outstanding faculty and staff through a series of prestigious awards. These accolades highlight the exceptional contributions of educators and administrators who have profoundly impacted the university community. Here, we recognize the recipients of these awards.

Honoring the Leaders of Emory and Goizueta

The Emory Williams Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award is presented to faculty members from each of Emory’s four undergraduate schools during commencement every year. “The award celebrates the pinnacle of teaching excellence, honoring faculty who have profoundly impacted their students’ academic journeys,” says Wei Jiang, vice dean for faculty and research and Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Finance. The award was established by Emory Williams, a 1932 Emory College alumnus and longtime trustee, to recognize a record of excellence in undergraduate teaching.

Emory College of Arts and Sciences selects three award recipients, drawn from the humanities, sciences, and social sciences. Each of the other undergraduate schools—Goizueta Business School, Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, and Oxford College—selects one award recipient.

Richard Berlin

The 2024 honoree from Goizueta Business School is Richard Berlin, associate professor in the practice of organization and management.

The remaining 2024 honorees are:

  • Christopher Eagle, associate teaching professor in the Center for the Study of Human Health, Emory College of Arts and Sciences
  • Sarah Fankhauser, associate professor of biology, Oxford College
  • Gillian Hue, assistant teaching professor, Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology program and senior faculty fellow, Center for Ethics, Emory College of Arts and Sciences
  • Brajesh Samarth, teaching professor, Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies, Emory College of Arts and Sciences
  • LisaMarie Wands, associate clinical professor, Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing

The Provost’s Distinguished Teaching Award

The Provost’s Distinguished Teaching Award for Excellence in Graduate and Professional Education recognizes outstanding scholars who excel as teachers within formal and informal educational settings. “This award honors exceptional teaching and recognizes those who guide their students with passion and expertise,” says Alicia Sierra, director of human resources and diversity.

One faculty member in each of Emory’s seven graduate and professional schools receives the award in recognition of the important role of exceptional teaching in graduate and professional education.

J.B. Kurish

The 2024 honoree from Goizueta Business School is J.B. Kurish, professor in the practice of finance.

The remaining 2024 honorees are:

  • Lauren Christiansen-Lindquist, assistant teaching professor, Department of Epidemiology, Rollins School of Public Health
  • Thomas W. Elliott Jr., professor in the practice of practical theology and Methodist studies, Candler School of Theology
  • George S. Georgiev, associate professor of law, Emory School of Law
  • Adriana P. Hermida, professor, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Emory School of Medicine
  • Lori A. Modly, assistant clinical professor, Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing
  • David A. Steinhauer, faculty, Microbiology and Molecular Genetics Program in the Graduate Division of Biological and Biomedical Sciences, and associate professor, School of Medicine Department of Microbiology and Immunology, James T. Laney School of Graduate Studies

The Keough Awards

The Keough Awards for Service are named after Don Keough, the legendary President of The Coca-Cola Company and a symbol of business excellence. This award is the business school’s highest service award and is awarded to one faculty member and one staff member. Each recipient receives a $2,000 award. “The recipient is a long-term contributor to the school and makes a significant impact or contribution to Goizueta,” says Jiang.

Keough Faculty Award

Kristy Towry

The recipient of the 2024 Keough Faculty Award is Professor Kristy Towry. Towry has served in many roles within Goizueta over many years. She has served as vice dean and significantly impacted the culture and comradery at the school. Towry also served as the chair of the executive committee, where she initiated a governance structure that has enhanced decision-making and evaluation. She served as a mentor to numerous junior faculty and doctoral students. In addition, Towry has shown true leadership by appealing to others’ values in helping and supporting the school.

Towry is a top researcher and has trained numerous influential students. She is a favorite teacher of hundreds of MBA graduates and has made a lasting contribution to the school.

Keough Staff Award

The 2024 Keough staff recipient is Krystle Arnold-Moore, administrative assistant, BBA program office. She has consistently made an impact since she started at Goizueta in the summer of 2019. Faculty and staff across the school quickly noticed her creativity, as she served as an active division student advisory council member and on the committee to build morale after the pandemic. She has helped other units with programmatic support during staff vacancies, all while continuing to grow her expertise in the BBA program office.

Staff Excellence Award: Collaboration

The staff excellence awards recognize staff who have “gone above and beyond in collaborating with others, managing resources, and overall influence at the school,” says Sierra. Each recipient receives a $1,000 award.

The 2024 recipient of the Staff Excellence Award for Collaboration is Brandi Baker, director of registrar services. Baker has worked tirelessly to accommodate Goizueta’s exponential growth as a school. She collaborates with program offices to meet the needs of faculty, students, and administrators and proactively finds solutions that create a more positive learning environment. Baker is in a position where she has to answer to colleagues across numerous academic programs. She is limited in terms of building capacity, and yet she manages to fit all the pieces together. In her work, she maintains a positive attitude and a “get to yes” philosophy.

Staff Excellence Award: Influence

The 2024 recipient of the Staff Excellence Award for Influence is Ron Harris, director of research computing. Harris has been the backbone of faculty research projects for decades. He helps faculty as a thought partner, sharing the work and thinking through choices. This ability requires a deep understanding of the datasets and faculty research challenges. He uses his data manipulation skills to clean data and make it serviceable for research. He also trains the next generation of scholars, our PhD students, in the use of statistical software. It would be fair to claim that the considerable pace of our research is due to Harris’s support.

Staff Excellence Award: Resources

The 2024 recipient of the Staff Excellence Award for Resources is Robin Dittmann, chief business, analytics, and operations officer. Dittmann has been instrumental in helping strengthen school finances. She has worked toward more efficient staffing levels, streamlined processes, and new policies to facilitate efficient resources by faculty and staff. She does so with expertise and transparency that instills confidence in the community.

Department Distinguished Teaching Awards

Emory and Goizueta also award those of exceptional academic excellence in each department. These awards go to individuals who represent their departments with outstanding education and lead the professionals of tomorrow. We would like to recognize them here.

  • – BBA Distinguished Educator: Emily Bianchi, Goizueta Foundation term associate professor of organization and management.
  • – Evening MBA Distinguished Core Educator: Omar Rodríguez-Vilá, professor in the practice of marketing.
  • – Evening MBA Distinguished Elective Educator: Kevin Crowley, associate professor in the practice of finance.
  • – Full-Time MBA Distinguished Educator: JB Kurish, professor in the practice of finance.

  • – MS in Business Analytics Distinguished Elective Educator: Emma Zhang, associate professor of information systems and operations management.

We are immensely proud to celebrate the accomplishments of our faculty. Through their transformational work, they push industries forward, prepare the next generation of business leaders, and solve today’s toughest business problems.

We’re kicking off the New Year by sharing some of our favorite stories shared on EmoryBusiness.com in 2023.

We mark the official start of the new year with celebrations on January 1. New Year’s is a time for new beginnings and a chance to start fresh. We revel in the possibilities and opportunities the new year brings. Frequently, it is a time for goal setting. Perhaps you’ve even made a New Year’s resolution or two?

But New Year’s is also a time to pause, if only for the briefest of moments, before we return to work, school, or whatever regularly scheduled programming life has in store for us. It’s a chance to take a pulse on the current state of things. We reflect on the past year, bask in the glow of its high points, and appreciate lessons learned from the challenges we faced.

So, before we launch full steam ahead into the new year, let’s take a look back at some great stories you may have missed this past year on EmoryBusiness.com.

Students Write Notes to Themselves for the Future

Every August, the students in Goizueta Business School’s Full-Time MBA programs gather for Keystone. It’s a week of giving back through volunteering and catching up with classmates after a summer internship. Students take the opportunity to pause, reflect, and project. As part Keystone, they write a letter to their future self, not to be opened for at least five years. The letter-writing experience has been a Goizueta MBA tradition since 2012.

Goizueta Business School hosted the 7th annual Emory Entrepreneurship Summit March 30-31. One of the highlight’s of this year’s was the keynote address from Stuart Weitzman. Known for his commitment to prioritizing function as an integral element of fashion, Weitzman encouraged those in attendance to pursue their passions. He shared insights with a packed room of aspiring entrepreneurs and innovators in the form of a number of his truisms—or as he prefers to call them, “Stu-isms.”

Goizueta Launches Graduate Business Degree for Veterans & Active-Duty Military

Goizueta Veterans Day Celebration

Best of all, students can complete the Master in Management program in just ten months. This provides a fast-track option for students to gain a valuable business education and expand their career options.

Virtual Reality Revolutionizes Classroom Learning

Jill Perry-Smith is bringing an entirely new dimension to Goizueta’s Executive MBA program. Her focus: navigating difficult conversations and finding effective conflict resolution strategies. Through the use of virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI), Perry-Smith, senior associate dean for strategic initiatives and professor of organization and management, hopes to provide more students with experience in dealing with interpersonal conflict.

Goizueta Faculty Work to Help the LGBTQ+ Community Thrive

Emory University’s Goizueta Business School and the LGBTQ Institute at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights are partners in the second survey of LGBTQ+ Southerners, released in April 2023. The study is a follow up to the 2017-18 inaugural survey, which was conducted by the Institute and George State University. This newly released study aims to help fill a critical research gap, looking at an understudied group with a larger data set.

The Voice of Alexa: How Speech Characteristics Impact Consumer Decisions

Meet Lauren Cohen 00BBA, who recently entered her 24th season with the National Basketball Association (NBA). But she doesn’t play basketball. She’s the vice president of partner management and operations lead for the NBA’s global partnerships group.

Cohen credits two things with the stability and tenure she’s enjoyed at the NBA: the people she works with and her opportunities to change roles every few years. But it all started with the strong foundation she build at Goizueta.

Preparing Workers of the Future

The future of work. What does it mean?

For Goizueta Business School graduates, the future of work is an exciting prospect, and they are ready for it. These workers of the future are embracing their passions and pursuing multiple careers. They are making business decisions for the betterment of society and leveraging technology to enhance their skills. On top of that, they are learning how to lead dispersed, remote teams.

Goizueta graduates don’t fear the future. They embrace it.

Talking about the Business of Healthcare

Gregory Esper MD 09EMBA and Sarah Kier 20EMBA

Healthcare is a business like many other industries, but instead of just making money, healthcare workers must also save lives. Navigating patient care and profitability is a unique challenge that neither business professionals nor doctors are able to address alone.

Goizueta helps bridge that gap. We teach clinicians the fundamentals of business and teach business professionals how to apply their knowledge specifically within the healthcare field.

Help keep the great Goizueta stories coming with a gift of support to Emory’s 2O36 campaign.

Goizueta Business School’s commitment to supporting our nation’s veterans has always been an essential tenet. The new Master in Business for Veterans, a fully accredited 11-month program designed for active-duty military, veterans, National Guard, and Reserve personnel, represents another step in a long history of supporting the transition of military members from service to a successful civilian career in business.

Built with flexibility in mind, students can continue to work as they earn a graduate business degree that contains all the core business courses of an MBA in less than a year. Every student will be offered a mentor and one-on-one career coaching. Eligible students can combine G.I. Bill and Yellow Ribbon benefits (pending VA approval) to cover the entire cost of tuition for the degree.

During the year, students will put knowledge and leadership experience to work in hands-on learning opportunities, honing their leadership, finance, marketing, data analytics, and operational strategy skills. All students will also participate in Goizueta IMPACT for Veterans, during which they will address strategic issues within various organizations, including Fortune 100 companies, non-profits, and start-ups.

Building the Advisory Board

Ken Keen spearheads Master in Business for Veterans program

Spearheaded by Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant General and Associate Dean for Leadership Ken Keen, as well as Faculty Lead Professor JB Kurish, the Master in Business for Veterans program will be guided by an advisory board of high level business executives, several of whom are both retired military and graduates of Goizueta.

“The advisory board was formed to counsel us on how to develop and facilitate a program that will be highly effective and beneficial for veteran students,” said Keen.

They will take a close look at the curriculum, provide ideas for how to help our veteran students transition to civilian careers, and guide how we approach career services.

Ken Keen

Raising funds for scholarships will be another core focus for the board, as these funds will help cover the cost of tuition for some students. Board members will also leverage their widespread connections to help set up corporate partnerships with companies in Atlanta and across the southeast.

Lorenzo Suarez, Managing Director of the Master in Business for Veterans program, adds, “The advisory board will provide invaluable advice to our candidates and help them reach their full potential. These individuals have had successful careers in business, so they know what a great job candidate looks like and can ensure our students exceed expectations.”

The inaugural Board of Advisors includes:

  • Matt Zames: Founder, Zames Group; Board Member, Institute for Veterans and Military Families
  • Matt Smith 01MBA: Major General, U.S. Army Commander Joint Task Force; North U.S. Northern Commander
  • Tom Beaty 97MBA: Founder and CEO, Insight Sourcing Group Holdings, Inc.; Founder, Witness to War Foundation
  • Patmon Malcom 03MBA: Partner, EARNEST Partners
  • Boe Young 89MBA: Major General (Ret), U.S. Army; CEO and Founder, Peacemaker Partners LLC

An Ongoing Commitment to Veterans

L-R: Emory University President Gregory L. Fenves, Goizueta Advisory Board Member Laura Balser 94BBA 01MBA, Master in Business for Veterans Advisory Board Member Major General Matt Smith 01MBA, and Ken Keen Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant General and Associate Dean for Leadership at a program launch event

Goizueta’s veteran-focused programming also includes funding opportunities and student-led groups. All admitted veterans eligible for and applying Post 9/11 – GI Benefits at 100% to the Master in Business for Veterans program will be awarded a Yellow Ribbon Scholarship from Goizueta. The combination of GI Benefits and the Yellow Ribbon Scholarship will cover all tuition and fees for the program. Enrolled students are also eligible to apply for the Master in Business for Veterans Student Support Fund, which can be applied towards tuition, books, fees, travel, housing, or other expenses incurred while in the program.

On the student side, the Goizueta Veterans Club offers veterans a place to gather and build lasting friendships. Additionally, the Goizueta Business School Veterans Association works to advance the careers of military veterans and active-duty service members by mentoring student veterans to overcome the unique issues that military veterans face as they transition to the civilian workforce.

According to Suarez, Goizueta’s dedication to supporting veterans was evident from day one. “From how I was received at the welcome ceremony and the immediate outpouring of support, it feels as though the entire city of Atlanta is ready to welcome veterans with open arms.” Suarez served eight years on active duty, with his last position as a commander in the Rakkasans (3rd Brigade, 101st Airborne). After leaving active duty, Suarez transitioned to agile software development in banking technology.

Alongside Keen, Suarez and the advisory board will establish significant in-person recruiting initiatives at the nine major military bases in the region.

The Master in Business for Veterans application opens August 1, 2023, with the first cohort of veterans starting classes in May 2024.

The first of its kind in the nation, in 2020 The Roberto C. Goizueta Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation launched Peachtree Minority Venture Fund (PMVF), a $1 million student-run venture fund focused on empowering underrepresented founders. Fund activities and related classwork began in the 2021-2022 academic year. Underrepresented minority founders receive less than three percent of U.S. venture capital investment. Peachtree Minority Venture Fund seeks to play a role in changing this narrative.

Each year, PMVF students acting in the investor role, along with faculty and advisory board input, hold the Spring Showcase at The Hatchery on campus to announce new investments. To date, the fund has made total investment commitments of $170K into seven companies in seven different industries in six cities. In the first round for the 2021-2022 academic year, the investment process began with commitments to CommunityX, Ecotone Renewables, and FundStory. Just this past spring, investments were committed to Arch, Chezie, ConConnect, and Tuyyo.

JB Kurish

JB Kurish, professor in the practice of finance and a Business & Society Institute faculty advisor, guides the PMVF’s academic curriculum with Jill Perry-Smith, senior associate dean, strategic initiatives, and academic director of The Roberto C. Goizueta Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation, Rob Kazanjian, Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Organization & Management, and Juanita Velez, adjunct professor and senior manager diversity, equity, and inclusion operations for Delta Airlines. In addition, Brian Cayce recently joined Goizueta Business School as Managing Director of The Roberto C. Goizueta Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation. Cayce brings 17 years of venture capital experience to the team having founded the early-stage impact-focused funds of Gray Ghost Ventures.

Nurturing Future Investors and Entrepreneurs

“Through directed curriculum and classwork, students gain the real-world analysis skills required to make informed investment decisions,” Kurish says. With an industry agnostic approach, “The fund follows a holistic research process during which the students operate in the role of investors. Investors not only learn about the company in front of them, but also about the larger industry and its risks and upside.”

Student participants come from a wide range of degree programs, including Goizueta’s undergraduate Bachelor of Business Administration program, the school’s multiple MBA programs, and Emory University’s law school. This diversity excites Kurish. “We like the fact that we’ve got students from various academic programs involved. Add to that their unique cultural perspectives and age differences and we all benefit from the interaction.”

A richness and experiential value come to students by what they bring as individuals to each discussion. This sharing develops a collective holistic appreciation for the needs and desires of underrepresented founders.

JB Kurish, professor in the practice of finance and Business & Society Institute faculty advisor

The PMVF documents investments of entrepreneurial funding ranging from $5-50K through a simple agreement for future equity. Kurish explains, “Most common are seed stage investments of $15-$30K. The goal for these investments is to gain allocation into a financing round led by institutional investors.”

In addition to benefiting each founder and company, this process also provides students unprecedented access and exposure to the world of venture capital–not to mention potential job opportunities.

JB Kurish

To educate and empower founders, the fund offers resources and tools such as Cap table simulator, talent locators, pitch deck examples and basics, and financial modeling for startups. As an educational partner to founders, Goizueta will continue to expand its impact for growth. Kurish notes, “In the future we will incubate their success with even more educational and professional networking opportunities.”

Changing the Funding Narrative

Each fall, student class members and leaders are selected for participation in the fund activities. Past student participants continue to support the fund by taking part in evaluative and processing activities in the fall. These fall activities pave the way for the main thrust of student engagement in spring.

During the 2023 spring class, the fund received over 50 applications. From this applicant pool, managing partners screened over 100 deals and engaged in preliminary due diligence on over 50 of them. To further narrow the pipeline of potential investment, the PMVF team conducted another round of deep due diligence on 10 deals. The investment committee then reviewed the final five deals and ultimately selected four companies to receive PMVF investment.

JB Kurish

After extensive research, interviews, and analysis by the PMVF team, the following companies received investment commitments through the fund in the 2022-2023 academic year:

  • Chezie, Co-Founder and CEO is Toby Egbuna, COO is Dumebi Egbuna 18BBA
  • ConConnect, Co-Founder and CEO is Andre Peart
  • Tuyyo, Founder & CEO is Stefanie Garcia Turner 21EMBA
  • Arch, CEO & Co-Founder is Gabriel Huertas del Pino and Adam Mutschler

It is an honor to receive an investment from Emory University’s Peachtree Minority Venture Fund. As an alumna of Goizueta Business School, this investment is a full circle moment as I began working on TUYYO while I was receiving my Executive MBA in 2020-2021. This investment will further support TUYYO’s growth in new retail locations across the United States and assist in our efforts to provide clean ingredient, Latin-inspired products to the LatinX community and beyond.

Tuyyo Foods Founder/CEO Stefanie Garcia Turner 21EMBA

To carry on the rich tradition of investing in and supporting underrepresented founders, the new managing partners of the Peachtree Minority Venture Fund have been named. Brandon Best 24MBA, Sumo Desai 24MBA, Savannah Holmes 24MBA, Brandon Jacobs 24BBA, Madeline Ledford 24MBA, Kevin Liu 24EvMBA, and Benedict Owanga 24JD will all lead for the coming year.

PMVF Wins the AACSB Innovations that Inspire 2023 Award

AACSB International, a global nonprofit, is the world’s largest business education alliance that connects educators, students, and businesses across the world. Since 1916, the organization has been committed to creating the next generation of leaders. As part of its advocacy outreach in more than 100 countries and territories, AACSB selects 25 Innovative Business Schools of Tomorrow that drive new value for stakeholders.

Kurish shared, “In the words of AACSB, Goizueta’s Peachtree Minority Venture Fund ‘was one of 25 institutions that demonstrate how AACSB member institutions are creating new value for a continuously evolving business world and global society.’”

Each year, Goizueta Business School honors faculty members for their dedication to and leadership in academic excellence in teaching, content development, experiential learning, scholarly inquisition, and commitment. We are proud to present this year’s recipients.

Several Goizueta faculty were recently recognized by Emory University for their accomplishments over the past year, including Assistant Professor in the Practice of Accounting Allison Kays and Associate Professor in the Practice of Marketing Omar Rodríguez-Vilá.

The Emory Williams Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award

Presented annually to faculty with a record of excellence in undergraduate teaching, this year’s award was presented to Allison Kays. The Emory Williams Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award recognizes faculty who foster participation, exemplify the highest quality of teaching scholarship, serve as a mentor to students, retain an ongoing commitment to teaching, and make significant contributions to advance the university through teaching.

Kays joined the Goizueta faculty in 2018 and teaches a core accounting course to students. She recently developed and taught a new course in data analytics that helps prepare students in the usage of Python and Excel.

“The pandemic brought unique teaching challenges to all Emory faculty and Allison rose to the occasion in so many ways,” John H. Harland Interim Dean Karen Sedatole wrote in her nomination form. “In the spring of 2020, Professor Kays went above and beyond to make sure that students would maintain their academic experience during the switch to online course delivery.”

Outside of teaching, Kays has served on several committees, including the Accounting Area NTT Faculty Selection Committee, as well as the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council and the Experimentation Zone Committee.

“I am so honored to receive this award and so lucky to get to do the work that I do,” Kays said. “Goizueta has brilliant undergraduate students who keep me on my toes. Their passion, curiosity, and desire to learn fuels my own desire to constantly improve my content and teaching methods.”

Provost’s Distinguished Teaching Award for Excellence in Graduate and Professional Education Teaching Award

For his dedication to teaching within formal and informal educational settings, Omar Rodríguez-Vilá was honored with the Provost’s Distinguished Teaching Award for Excellence in Graduate and Professional Education Teaching Award. The award honors faculty who foster participation and engage students, dedicate their time to advancing the art and science of teaching and learning, make significant contributions that impact the university through teaching, serve as a mentor to students and form advising relationships with graduate and professional students.

Rodríguez-Vilá currently serves as the academic director of education at the academic research center, The Roberto C. Goizueta Business & Society Institute. His current research focuses on two areas: how the environmental and social sustainability considerations are changing the nature of marketing activities; and how brands communicate societal benefits in social media and into the marketplace practices of antiracists brands. His work has been published in Harvard Business Review, and includes one of his most recent works, “Is Your Marketing Organization Ready for What’s Next?”

ATLANTA (June 3, 2019)—The Executive Education Program at Emory University’s Goizueta Business School ranked No. 28 in the world in rankings released today by Financial Times. Among schools operating exclusively in the United States, the program ranks seventh.

Financial Times surveys satisfaction in custom programs by various measures. Goizueta’s executive programs ranked in the global Top 25 in course preparation (25), program design (21), skills and learning (24), aims achieved (23), faculty quality (20), program follow-up (20), and value (18). Complete results can be found here.

“It’s a great honor to be among the best in the world when it comes to offering meaningful non-degree executive programs,” said J.B. Kurish, Senior Associate Dean for Executive Education and Professor in the Practice of Finance. “We believe there is a great value and need for open enrollment and customized courses and certificates to equip business leaders with skills they can learn today and apply tomorrow.”

The Executive Education program currently offers more than a dozen, ongoing short courses and seven certificate programs, including the Roberto C. Goizueta Leadership Certificate. Additional offerings for female executives and LGBTQ leaders have been added in recent years. A host of corporate clients also engage Emory for custom programming. Past clients include SunTrust, The Home Depot, Nielsen, International Paper, Crawford and Company, UPS, and the Genuine Parts Company.

“Business education is not just about degrees,” said Erika James, the John H. Harland Dean of Goizueta Business School. “We must make sure we prepare the workforce for the future and ensure the current workforce has the ability necessary to succeed. Short, custom programs like those offered through executive education are a terrific way to improve the outcomes of individuals and organizations while honoring our mission to serve the business community.”

Creating high performing teams https://www.emorybusiness.com/2019/05/14/creating-high-performing-teams/ Tue, 14 May 2019 15:39:14 +0000 https://www.emorybusiness.com/?p=18429 A conversation with Goizueta Business School professor J. B. Kurish.

“We learned a lot about the human element of what makes teams great. So, you think about high performance teams, and you think about numbers, and you think about strategy, and sometimes you forget that there is a human element – that’s the thing that drives it” says Todd Weiden, an EVP at SunTrust Bank, and participant in one of Emory Executive Education’s custom programs, where the focus was on converting high performance individuals into high performing teams.

Professor J. B. Kurish, Senior Associate Dean for Executive Education at Emory University’s Goizueta Business School, sees that the human element is central to great leadership and incorporates this in the design of their custom programs. He is clear on how vital the human relationships between the school and its clients are for successful programs to be delivered over the long-term.

Drawing on his previous experience as an investment banker, Kurish recalls that long-term partnerships are the key to good business. He advocates “taking advantage when markets are not in your favor, so that you already have relationships in place when the market does turn.” This long- term approach of nurturing client relationships and really understanding the client’s issues and challenges is key to Emory Executive Education’s custom programming approach.

Since Kurish took over leadership of Emory Executive Education at Goizueta Business School he has been keen to expand their geographic footprint – and has overseen building new relationships, nationally and internationally. Creating alliances with institutions outside of Atlanta and the U.S. opens the door to deliver content across the globe to new and existing clients. Frequently, participants in a custom program represent an organization’s global geographic footprint.

Kurish has also expanded the ‘intellectual footprint’ with a broadening of the programs offered, drawing on the expertise and depth of knowledge of the wider Emory University faculty. “With an increased intellectual footprint – we can cover more topics that are vitally important for senior leaders” says Kurish, highlighting that Emory University has world-leading expertise in healthcare. With renowned schools of medicine, nursing, and public health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention located just off campus, Emory Executive Education has access to an extraordinary nexus of knowledge about healthcare.

Emory Executive Education combines its strength in organizational strategy and leadership with cutting–edge content to deliver custom programs that are founded on deep knowledge of real-world challenges and new solutions. Access to real- world applications and dovetailing these into the curriculum makes the learning more tangible and impactful, and allows participants to gain enduring insight from applied theories.

One of the major challenges facing corporations today is understanding how to handle data analysis effectively. Emory has special expertise in delivering instruction on this, having launched its Master of Science in Business Analytics program (MSBA) – in 2017. Kurish, himself a respected finance professor, views the deluge of data available to organizations as a growing challenge. Emory Executive Education brought content from the MSBA program into its open enrollment and custom programs in recent months. At Emory, the Executive Education team spends a great deal of time with custom clients working through the data and identifying what is relevant and what is not. Kurish asks “how do we stop ourselves from drowning in all the information out there?” I think we need to slow ourselves down and think more broadly about the questions  we need to ask. In this day and age, with all the tools available, and all the data available, it is too easy to drive to solutions. I think organizations spend a lot of time driving to the wrong destinations. What we find with our custom clients is that they look to us to help them think about ways to sort out the relevant information.”

“This is where I think we do excellent work, in talking with executives and assessing what they need… and they appreciate it. They might say, ‘wow, we knew there was something but we really didn’t have it defined very well’ and they are open to us pushing back on them when we dig a little deeper and say ‘here’s what we perceive you really need. This allows us to build a better program with the client in mind. We very much stress the importance of collaborating with our client.”

Kurish’s conversation loops back time and again to the importance of relationships, the connections that grow between participants in programs and that endure long afterwards; the trust fostered between faculty and participants; and the vitally strong relationship between program provider and client – all of which are needed to create impactful program results. He is clear that Emory’s relatively small size, compared to some of their competitors in this top field of executive education providers, allows their relationships to be nurtured more successfully. “We truly view ourselves as a family and an intimate community of scholars and leadership professionals. We consistently get evaluated as being excellent on this rubric. We believe our small size really helps us perform better. We’re great on the tough analytics – you need to have the technical skills, which are necessary but not sufficient conditions for you to be successful as a leader. You need to really understand how to deal with people, small teams, big teams, and organizations. Personal relationships are what count in the end.”

If you want to get to your destination, a boat trip that lasts 10 years is probably not the most effective way to go. For the Goizueta Advanced Leadership Academy (GALA), though, a decade-long journey is just about perfect.

GALA launched in 2007 with an ambitious, innovative curriculum featuring a mix of seminars, guest speakers, and tailored coaching designed to develop full-time MBA students into thoughtful leaders. But the true test for GALA fellows came then, as it does now, with a capstone trip to the British Virgin Islands, where fellows put their burgeoning leadership skills to the test by sailing open waters.

“The experience mimics what students would encounter at a new job,” says Harriet Ruskin 90MBA, director in the MBA Program Office and the trip’s organizer. “They don’t know the details of the organization, and this is an opportunity to use their skills in a new environment.”

GALA is a perfect example of experiential learning. The majority of the fellows have little to no nautical experience, so from the outset, it’s sink or sail. But the true educational experience comes with navigating team dynamics.

“The experience of the sailing trip provides an interesting set of metaphors that reveal to students how they work in an organization and how they work in teams,” says J.B. Kurish, senior associate dean for executive education and co-lead for the programs. “The immediate feedback they receive from team members, not to mention to the trajectory of the boat, provides insight and opportunities for self-reflection and course corrections.”

“You learn to work cohesively, develop a culture, celebrate the small wins, and avoid getting bogged down or frustrated with failures,” notes Kim Walter 17MBA. “Most importantly, you understand how to learn from those failures.”

Such insights have been key GALA elements from the beginning, but the sailing trip has evolved in a variety of ways. The fellows’ time on the water now is significantly longer than before, going from 4 days/3 nights to 7 days/7 nights. This results in smaller, more efficient crews (five students, one GBS facilitator, and a professional skipper) that ensure each student sailor can serve in every role the boat allows.

“What makes GALA so effective in leader development is the combination of rigorous coursework to introduce and hone concepts and the sailing trip that then allows them to put those skills into action,” says Ken Keen, associate dean of leadership development and co-lead for the program.

Years after docking, many GALA alumni still list the program as not only the most memorable experience of their time at Goizueta, but among the most treasured times of their lives.

Healthcare is constantly evolving, and staying current can be a challenge. Emory Executive Education is harnessing faculty expertise and industry contacts to offer new programming that enables executives to be responsive to shifts in the field. Recently, JB Kurish, professor in the practice of finance and senior associate dean for executive education, and Susan-Anne MacKenna, director of executive education programs, sat down to talk more about the intersection of healthcare and business.

Q: Emory Executive Education is introducing a series of new courses with an emphasis on healthcare. What was the impetus behind this move?

Kurish: Clearly, healthcare is an incredibly important, powerful sector that impacts everyone in some way. We knew the topic was ripe for programming and began to talk to colleagues and alumni to delve into the questions: What is happening in a big sense with regulatory and legislative issues, and how are people involved with healthcare impacted by its new and changing environment?

MacKenna: As we spoke with people about the changing environment, we realized they were seeking answers to these same questions. In fact, there is a pent-up demand, especially in Atlanta, for more education by those inside healthcare organizations and others who partner with them.

Q: Is the new healthcare certificate a result of this demand?

MacKenna: Within the healthcare space, there are not many business schools using executive education as a primary delivery model. Some provide a course here or there, but none have created a concentrated, focused certificate series that can provide genuine value. This was a gap we could uniquely and distinctively fill.

Kurish: We also know our audience needs flexibility. The courses will be stand alone, with a two-day delivery time, so participants can take one or more without any prerequisites. We will launch our Goizueta Healthcare Certificate courses in early 2017. Instruction is delivered primarily by Steve Culler, associate professor of health policy and management at Rollins School of Public Health with a dual appointment as adjunct associate professor of finance at Goizueta, and Greg Esper 09EMBA, a practicing physician, director of a neurology practice, director of new care models for Emory Healthcare, and a professor at Emory’s School of Medicine with an adjunct appointment at Goizueta. In addition, other healthcare experts within the broader Emory community also serve to deliver content in the offerings to provide broader perspectives from across the healthcare industry.

Q: How is Goizueta uniquely positioned to offer this topic of healthcare?

Kurish: We can leverage the assets and resources we have at Emory—our great academic schools and our proximity to and relationships within the CDC.

Additionally, many of the medical doctors who have gone through our executive MBA program are now in senior roles in their organizations, here at Emory or elsewhere, and have become change agents within the healthcare delivery system. They are making an impact, having a voice, and telling us that what they learned in business is helping them to have better outcomes.

Q: How many classes will make up the certificate?

MacKenna: Six courses are required for the advanced certificate, five of which are taught here at Goizueta and one at The Washington Campus, an educational entity that provides specialized, immersive, week-long seminars in Washington, DC.
