Students in Goizueta’s Master of Finance program taking steps to career success through preparation for the CFA Program.

Atlanta, GA, February 19, 2025 — Emory University has become the latest university to be welcomed into the CFA Institute University Affiliation Program. Goizueta Business School’s Master of Finance program has been acknowledged as incorporating at least 70 percent of the CFA Program curriculum and placing emphasis on the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct. The CFA program positions students well to obtain the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) certification, which has become the most respected and recognized investment credential worldwide.

Entry into the CFA Institute University Affiliation Program signals to potential students, employers, and the marketplace that Emory University’s curriculum is closely tied to professional practice and is well-suited to preparing students to sit for the CFA Program examinations. Through participation in this program, Emory University is eligible to receive a limited number of CFA Program Student Scholarships each year.

Emory University’s Goizueta Business School offers a 10-month, STEM-designated Master of Finance program designed for versatile thinkers aiming for careers in sales and trading, investment management, FinTech, and investment banking. Developed by finance industry professionals, the program provides a rigorous curriculum that combines theoretical foundations with practical applications, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of financial markets, investment strategies, and risk management.

“It is exciting to be approved as a CFA-affiliate program. We share high standards of academic excellence, ethical integrity, and a desire to advance the finance industry,” shared Kirsten Travers-UyHam, associate professor in the practice of finance. “As a committed member of the Emory Goizueta finance faculty and the CFA Society, I recognized an immediate opportunity to collaborate, bringing advantages to both students and the industry.”

“Being a CFA-affiliate program will enhance our already strong partnership with the CFA Atlanta chapter. Together, we host networking events, connect students to exciting industry programs, and work on community service projects for the CFA foundation. At our upcoming jointly-hosted event, students will speed-network with CFA charter holders at leading firms such as Invesco, JP Morgan, BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta.”

Students gain hands-on experience through a unique analyst immersion, spending time “on the job” in the Finance Lab to build market knowledge and insights. The program emphasizes data-driven financial analysis techniques, applying cutting-edge data and analytical tools to identify solutions to complex business problems. Graduates are well-prepared for leadership roles in the dynamic global financial landscape.

This unique approach allows graduates to excel in roles such as investment management analysts, credit risk analysts, data scientists, and asset management wealth analysts.

“Our curriculum is quite focused on industry experience” says Tom Smith, professor in the practice of finance and academic director of Goizueta’s finance master’s degree. “We want our students to get as much ‘hands-on’ experience as possible. We do this through our New York City trip, off-sight visits to companies in and around Atlanta, and by having industry leaders provide guest lectures. I’m really focused on bringing industry into the classroom.”

Our students are sought after in the market—they are receiving amazing job offers and are working for some of the best companies in the world! I couldn’t be more proud of how well our students are doing.

Tom Smith

Smith acknowledges that employment and employability are not the only metrics that indicate a successful program but does note that this is a core objective of many students.

The program has made several changes the last few years by adding electives in real estate and corporate finance and continues to offer opportunities for students to learn new skills and modeling techniques consistent with the growing trends in AI and machine learning. “Our students are succeeding, but we’re not going to sit back and coast; the market is constantly changing, and we’re going to change with the market,” says Smith. “We have an obligation to our students to provide an education that matches the current needs of the market. Our award-winning faculty are constantly adapting to market needs — I know this is what makes our program special.”

This year’s cohort represents countries from around the world, including Austria, China, Dominican Republic, Hungary, India, Nepal, Norway, Russia, Spain, Taiwan, United Kingdom, and the United States..

“Already in its third year since inception, the program’s enrollment has grown by almost 50 percent. This year’s diverse cohort of students represents 12 countries from around the world, and 60 percent of our students received their undergraduate degree from a U.S. university,” says Zuzana Hlavacova Gurung, associate dean of Goizueta’s specialized masters programs.

Over the past several days, students at Emory University and Goizueta Business School gathered with family, friends, faculty, and staff to celebrate a transformational rite of passage—commencement.

This year’s festivities took place at the Gas South District, just outside of Atlanta. Gregory L. Fenves, president of Emory University, says the decision was made to relocate to address safety and security concerns in light of the numerous protests sweeping campuses across the country.

The Courage of the Class of 2024

Robert Franklin, the James T. and Berta R. Laney Professor in Moral Leadership at the Candler School of Theology, acknowledged the change of venue for this year’s events when he welcomed undergraduates in the Class of 2024 to the university ceremony on Monday morning.

Franklin reflected on the unique challenges faced by this class, who graduated high school amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and the courage with which they’ve faced it all.

“When the history books are written, those headlines will tell only a part of the story. What they will not capture is the depth of your resilience, your humanity, your thoughtfulness. They will not capture your countless daily efforts to lift others up and, even when it’s painful, to hear the perspectives of others, especially those with whom you disagree,” said Franklin.

Gareth James, John H. Harland Dean of Goizueta Business School echoed Franklin’s sentiments. “Our commencement festivities this year may look a little different. However, our commitment to honoring the immense achievements of this graduating class remains unchanged. I want to recognize our students, faculty, and staff who have continued to persevere.”

Graduate and Undergraduate Programs Celebrate in Diploma Ceremonies

Goizueta Business School’s graduate programs kicked off the celebration of commencement weekend with a diploma ceremony on Friday, May 10. James commended the graduates of the Evening MBA, Executive MBA, One-Year MBA, Two-Year MBA, M.S. in Business Analytics, Master of Analytical Finance, as well as those securing dual degrees for their dedication and resilience.

During his remarks, James focused on the students and their accomplishments. “In our newest graduating class, I see enormously talented and principled leaders. You are ready to solve the biggest challenges of our future,” James said. “I cannot wait to see where you go next, the ways you will continue to thrive, and how you will leave your mark on the world around us.”

Tiffany Willis 15EMBA addresses the class of 2024

Tiffany Willis 15EMBA, vice president and head of investor relations and ESG Engagement, Starbucks, delivered the keynote address during Friday’s diploma ceremony. “Over the next 10 minutes, I hope to pour into you, the same way Emory has poured into me when I was here for my graduate degree,” shared Willis. As graduates embark on their next chapter, Willis encouraged them “embrace the hustle, maintain the momentum, own your narrative, remember your why, and yield to your wildest dreams.”

The undergraduate Bachelor of Business Administration diploma ceremony took place on Monday, May 13. During the ceremony, James shared, “As I look at our graduating BBA class, I am filled with tremendous pride, gratitude, and optimism. You are the toughest group of students we have ever graduated.”

Andrea Hershatter, associate dean of undergraduate education at Goizueta, recognized legatees and kicked off the diploma ceremony. “One of the most gratifying moments at commencement is celebrating the continuation of family legacies. It is a great moment when a parent, grandparent, or sibling passes the Emory torch to another family member. This creates a deep bond between the university and that family.” Hershatter then recognized the full lineup of new graduates as they crossed the stage.

Emory University Commencement Keynote Address Delivered by Valerie Montgomery Rice, MD

Valerie Montgomery Rice MD

Valerie Montgomery Rice MD, president and CEO of Morehouse School of Medicine, served as Emory’s 2024 Commencement speaker. Montgomery Rice is a groundbreaking physician-scientist and university leader. She has worked tirelessly to foster diversity within the medical profession and the scientific workforce. “She wants to hold the door open so that others can follow and find success in their career and lives,” explained Fenves. During Montgomery Rice’s time as president and CEO, the Morehouse School of Medicine has solidified its reputation as a “powerhouse in the advancement of health equity,” he added.

Montgomery Rice has strong ties to Emory, having completed her medical training at the School of Medicine. She began her remarks by reflecting on her experience studying at Emory. She trained at both Emory University Hospital and Grady Memorial Hospital—two facilities with quite different patient populations. However, during her training, she witnessed her professor treat patients at both hospitals with the same expertise and respect. This experience helped set the foundation for her commitment to health equity.

Advice for the “School of Life”

Speaking to students who mostly began their Emory careers in fall 2020, Montgomery Rice noted this was the first educational milestone many were able to celebrate in person. And while their time as Emory students ended that morning, she explained, their time in the “school of life” was just beginning.

Getting here is a great accomplishment. But having traveled this road, I can only imagine that for some of you, it wasn’t easy.

Keynote speaker Valerie Montgomery Rice MD

“Maybe you had to work two or three jobs. Perhaps you struggled to get passing grades. Or maybe you had to change directions when you figured out the career path you thought you wanted no longer fit for your future,” she said.

On this “first day in the school of life,” she left students with a homework assignment: to hug the people in their support systems and share how grateful they are. After all, nobody got here alone.

“Many of you will do great things. However, to graduate from the school of life with a cum laude degree, all you have to do is one thing,” Montgomery Rice said. “That is to do the best you can with what you have. And remember to listen, learn, include, and grow.”

“The world may not be ready for you, but I am confident you are ready for the world.”

During the ceremony, Montgomery Rice received an honorary degree. Emory also awarded honorary degrees to violin virtuoso Robert McDuffie and the president of the National Academy of Medicine, Victor J. Dzau MD.

Onward and Upward for the Class of 2024

As faculty, staff, students, parents, and loved ones cheered on the Class of 2024, they celebrated the graduates’ bright futures ahead.

President Fenves encouraged graduates to take a moment and bask in the glow of their achievements. He reminded the Class of 2024 that they were surrounded by those they love the most. “Enjoy this moment of accomplishment. In the years ahead, you will strive to achieve new goals. But right now, take one more look around at your friends and your family. Appreciate this experience. You have reached a milestone in your life. It is you who did this. You made it happen. Savor it, enjoy it, celebrate it.”

Dean James shared his enthusiasm with the graduates as well, now the newest alumni of the school’s dynamic network. “Ultimately, Goizueta will be judged based on the graduates we produce. I’m incredibly proud to lead your school. A major reason for that is all of you sitting out there. You are ready to go out to prove, yet again, what an amazing school we have. You now have the honor and privilege to call yourselves Emory Goizueta alums. Congratulations to the graduates of the Class of 2024!”

In early April, Goizueta Business School’s Advancement and Alumni Engagement Office recognized three outstanding individuals in their annual award ceremony. This night honors alumni for their dedication to their profession, Goizueta, and the greater Emory University community. With an alumni network of 27,000, finding just a handful of alumni to recognize is no easy feat.

“Goizueta has so many alumni who make us extremely proud. This year’s honorees definitely stood out, though,” says Lindsay Topping, managing senior director of alumni engagement for Goizueta. “We could not be more thrilled to recognize this year’s award recipients: Sig Mosley, Dipeeka Bastola, and Debbie Perantoni.”

Distinguished Alumnus Award: Sig Mosley 66Ox 68BBA

The Distinguished Alumnus Award began in 1984. It serves as Goizueta’s way of recognizing an individual who has achieved success in their career and has an ongoing commitment to serving their community and the Goizueta community. This year’s recipient was Sig Mosley 66Ox 68BBA.

Mosley was nominated by Robert Kazanjian, Asa Griggs Candler Professor of organization and management and former academic director of The Roberto C. Goizueta Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

“Honoring Sig in this way pays homage to his long history of contributions to Goizueta students with interests in entrepreneurship and investing,” says Kazanjian in his nomination.

Sig has done more than any other alum to support the Center for Entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship programming at Goizueta. He has been central to our efforts over the past decade.

Mosley, known as the “godfather of angel investing” in the Southeast, is currently the managing partner of Mosley Ventures. He has helped fund nearly 150 startups in the Southeast since 1990 and holds the record in the region for the largest venture deal ($5.7 billion) for the acquisition of Tradex by Ariba.

Mosley even has an awards program named after him: The Siggie Awards. The awards honor early-stage investors helping to grow Atlanta’s entrepreneurial ecosystem and recognize unsung heroes in the Atlanta startup community.

“It is truly an honor to receive the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Goizueta. Being one of many qualified alumni from the school, it is truly a privilege to receive this award. I look forward to continuing to work with the school in the years ahead,” says Mosley.

Outstanding Recent Alumna Award: Dipeeka Bastola 20MSBA

The newest alumna of the three award recipients, Dipeeka Bastola 20MSBA, receives this year’s Outstanding Recent Alumna Award.

The award, which began in 1999, recognizes a recent graduate (within the last five years) who demonstrates outstanding service to Goizueta and Emory University, notable success in business, or exceptional service to the community.

Bastola is the first MS in Business Analytics degree alumna to receive this award. She currently works as a data scientist for The Home Depot.

Nominator Christine Battle, program director of Goizueta’s Master of Analytical Finance degree, speaks highly of Bastola. “Dipeeka has been a leader from the time she was admitted into the MSBA program. Now, she continues to lead as an alumna,” says Battle. “She consistently comes back to campus to share her knowledge and experience with students.”

Her warm personality and go-getter attitude have allowed many students to learn from her experiences and trust the process of going through graduate school and landing their dream role.

Christine Battle, program director, Master of Analytical Finance

“One of the greatest things about Dipeeka is she gives back beyond just the Business Analytics program. She has also served on panels and attended sessions for the Master of Analytical Finance program and other Goizueta events,” continues Battle. “Dipeeka is a true leader. She embodies what we would want all Goizueta alumni to be. She is personable, responsible, and committed to helping others succeed. I know I can always count on Dipeeka whenever I reach out to her. She is well deserving of this award.”

Alumni Service Award: Debbie Perantoni 00EvMBA

The Alumni Service Award began in 1995 to recognize alumni who demonstrate significant service to Goizueta or Emory. Debbie Perantoni 00EvMBA, director of product technology at AT&T, is this year’s recipient.

“Over the past decade of being actively engaged in the Goizueta alumni community, I’ve attended many recognition events. However, I never expected the honor of such an award,” says Perantoni. She was nominated for the honor by Jason Payton 12EvMBA, current Goizueta Alumni Board president.

I’m so grateful for the opportunity to serve. I can honestly say I get way more out of the alumni experience than I could ever hope to give back.

Perantoni’s volunteerism to Goizueta and the greater Emory community includes multiple roles on the Goizueta Alumni Board. She is a former board president and served seven years on the board. Perantoni was instrumental in the Goizueta@Work program, helping foster an alumni community at AT&T, where she has worked for 18 years. She has also been a mentor, supported Goizueta events, sponsored two IMPACT projects, and is finishing up an MS in Business Analytics capstone project.

In his nomination, Payton wrote, “Debbie has served Goizueta in multiple capacities for many years. She is a selfless leader and has always shown the willingness to do whatever is necessary to support students, faculty, and Goizueta’s core values. Debbie represents the best of Goizueta professionally and personally.”

Congratulations to this year’s alumni award winners. As Steve Greenfield 04EvMBA emcee for this year’s ceremony said in his closing remarks of the evening: “You each are an inspiration.”

On a Saturday morning in late January, around 100 Cadettes—Girl Scouts in sixth, seventh and eighth grades—piled into Atlanta’s Federal Reserve Bank. Their mission: to learn more about their financial futures and how to steer them.

Helping them in their quest were several Goizueta Business School Master of Analytical Finance students and members of the Atlanta Society of Finance and Investment Professionals (ASFIP). ASFIP is a nonprofit founded eight years ago by the CFA Society of Atlanta that provides free financial literacy education in high-needs areas of the community. They frequently partner with nonprofits, schools, and other organizations including Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta. Now, they’re partnering with Goizueta Business School.

“ASFIP holds this event each year, but it was the first year that we had the chance to join them,” says Associate Professor of the Practice of Finance Kirsten Travers-UyHam.

“Financial literacy is so important. It fits within the mission of our program to get out into the Atlanta community and share the expertise we have with the next generation of professionals. So, this was a win-win. It was the perfect opportunity for our students to gain important experience themselves. They presented their ideas clearly and concisely in an unfamiliar setting, while coaching and helping others gain confidence as well. These are all good skills to practice as our students prepare for the working world themselves!”

Fun With Funds at the Federal Reserve Bank

Located in Midtown Atlanta, The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta is a stately white marble building that is familiar to many locals. One of the 12 regional banks in the Federal Reserve System of the United States, it serves the Sixth Federal Reserve District, which covers Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. The Federal Reserve Bank conducts monetary policy, supervises and regulates banks, and provides financial services to banks and the U.S. government.

Few are aware that that it also contains the Atlanta Monetary Museum, an interactive exhibit free to Georgia residents with a state ID. Visitors can catch a glimpse of the bank’s automated vault and cash-processing areas. Other highlights include historical coins and rare large denomination notes (including 10,000 bills).

“The Federal Reserve Bank is very generous in their community outreach, providing us the space to meet, a meal, and a tour free of charge,” says Chartered Financial Analyst and President of ASFIP Foundation Kathleen Chrisman. “The Girl Scouts got to see the counting room, where employees process giant bales of real cash worth over a million dollars.”

For Sidhant Mattha 24MAF, the highlight of the event was witnessing the Girl Scouts’ enthusiasm.

“The Girl Scouts were so intelligent and curious,” says Mattha. “They knew about finance, economics, and banking even at this young age.”

The Girl Scouts were also delighted with their free souvenir: the bank hands out baggies of shredded bills at the end of the tour—confetti made from the multiple millions of dollars’ worth of physical bills the reserve destroys each day.

Closing The Financial Gender Gap

Despite progress toward gender equality in recent decades, girls are still often left out of the conversation when it comes to matters of personal finance. And when families do discuss finances, daughters typically get a different message than sons: where parents might advise girls to focus on “fiscal restraint,” they frequently teach boys to focus on building wealth. Though it may seem like a subtle difference, this framing has the potential to shape a young person’s expectations for their life in powerful ways.

“Nearly 50 percent of lawyers and doctors are women, yet women are still dramatically unrepresented in fields of finance. Even across the global expanse of the CFA Society, women members make up about 16 percent of our membership,” says Chrisman. “We want to see that change.”

Amen Mahary 24MAF was eager to be part of that change.

I was drawn to the opportunity to connect with young Girl Scouts, sharing my journey from college to pursuing my master’s degree, emphasizing the invaluable role of education. I was also eager to impart knowledge on financial literacy—a subject close to my heart, as I believe many individuals are unaware of its transformative impact.

Amen Mahary

In addition to the Federal Bank tour, the day’s events included a robust financial literacy program. The lesson covered topics such as budgeting, managing risk, and FICO scores. The Goizueta students we’re able to shine during a career panel, which featured women in the investment industry.

“Financial Literacy is what motivated me to pursue the Master of Analytical Finance in the first place,” says Mack Morris 24MAF. “I worked as a Financial Aid Counselor at an Atlanta Public High School last year and loved seeing the impact of my work every day and building connections with students. This event was an opportunity to connect with young people about a cause I’m passionate about and get them excited about making smart financial decisions.”

Partnership with CFA and The Joy of Giving back

Engaging the community is a way to share valuable knowledge, but also to prepare students for the real world and help them build their network.

“Forming connections with fellow volunteers was truly rewarding,” says Mahary. “Each individual brought unique perspectives and a shared passion for educating Girl Scouts on financial literacy.”

“Finance sometimes can be seen as an individual work environment. In the Master of Analytical Finance program, we strive for students to understand the importance of working together and giving back, as one of the core values of Goizueta Business School is community,” says Program Director Christine Battle.

By serving in different volunteer experiences and attending finance organization events, students are able to see how versatile the world of finance is outside of the classroom.

Christine Battle

For Mack Morris, who will be joining Emory Investment Management as an Investment Analyst for Emory’s Endowment next year, this practical application is one of her favorite aspects of the program.

“I love how practical the program has been,” says Morris. “It feels more like I am in training for a real job than it does feel like school. I feel so well prepared.”

Chrisman notes how much it adds to these events to have young adults as role models.

“We really like to have young people in addition to seasoned professionals at events,” says Chrisman. “It makes for a nice demographic balance. The Goizueta students were enthusiastic, and really helped underscore the material. It was a pleasure to have them there.”

“Our close relationship with the CFA Society of Atlanta has been transformative for our 2024 MAF students,” says Travers-UyHam. “They’ve worked on the CFA exam curriculum, actively participated in Atlanta chapter events, attended enriching social networking and educational events, and secured victory in the CFA Ethics Challenge for the second consecutive year!”

“When I designed the Master of Analytical Finance program, I wanted to shape the industry to reflect our vision and ideals for the next generation of finance.  I know that finance can be a tough profession. Experiences like this help us to build the students’ comfort and confidence in the complexities of the industry.”

Deeply immersive and career-focused, Goizueta’s Master of Analytical Finance is experiential learning at its finest. Learn more here, and prepare for a next generation finance career.

Mack Morris 24MAF was worried about applying to Goizueta Business School’s Masters of Analytical Finance program.

While she didn’t have any shortage of analytical know-how, she was concerned about her lack of financial prowess.

“Everyone I spoke to during the recruitment process reassured me that I would be welcomed into the program. They assured me that my lack of financial knowledge wouldn’t be a hindrance,” she says.

As she looks forward to graduation, that sense of belonging and community remain strong.

My years of exploring other paths have been an asset to the program rather than something I had to compensate for.

Mack Morris 24MAF

Morris will be staying at Emory after graduation. The soon-to-be graduate of the Masters of Analytical Finance program is looking forward to her job as investment analyst for Emory Investment Management. There, she’ll be working with the public equity team to continue to put the university’s endowment fund to good use for current and future students.

“It feels so cool to be staying with Emory,” she says of her new job. “With this being only a one-year program, it can be hard to feel connected to the university. But knowing I’ll be here [after graduation] has kept me engaged in the classroom and motivated to stay involved in the campus community.”

Before graduate school was a thought in Morris’ head, she was a student at Missouri State University. Somehow, she managed to wrangle the coursework of two bachelor’s degrees and three minors—at the same time that she was working.

Her background is focused in academia. Morris held roles as a teaching assistant, student ambassador and regional lead for Cengage Learning, and eventually as a financial aid and scholarship advisor for AmeriCorps.

The Good Samaritan (Financial) Outlook

After visiting her best friend, who was already living in Atlanta, Morris fell in love with the city. She attended improv and filmmaking events with her friend, who’s an actress. Morris said it was this experience—the arts community—that drew her.

“When I decided to move to Atlanta, I wanted to spend a year doing something completely unrelated to anything I had done before,” says Morris.

This desire led her to AmeriCorps because “it’s a values-driven organization that takes people from all backgrounds.” The year-long role exposed her to new experiences and new people.

“I loved working on a small team of devoted professionals. I saw the impact of my work every day and felt motivated to do even the smallest tasks,” says Morris.

During her yearlong role, she began to realize she was missing something: the analytics. Through her conversations with high school students and families, she also realized where her strengths were.

My comparative advantage was in quantitative reasoning, data analysis, and talking about finance. I could do so in a way that non-finance people could understand. As I met with financial professionals and researched opportunities, I felt pulled to a career in finance.

Mack Morris 24MAF

“I knew I wanted to see a more tangible impact from my work. Finance seemed the perfect intersection of my training and my desire to do good in the world,” says Morris.

To better launch that career, Morris began looking at graduate school options. While she had the strength for analysis, she wanted to learn more finance-specific skills and the resources to figure out the perfect next step for her career in this industry.

Since she was already located in Atlanta, one program stood out.

Making the Most of a 10-Month Program

Though Goizueta’s Masters of Analytical Finance program is less than one year long, it’s action-based. In addition to a hefty courseload, students receive ample networking opportunities. These include listening to guest speakers, off-site trips, and participating in community events. It was through these non-classroom experiences that Morris began to feel like a full-fledged member of the greater Atlanta financial community.

“I went to the Chartered Financial Analyst Society annual forecast dinner with some of my classmates. I saw at least a dozen familiar faces there from people we had been introduced to within the program.”

It made me feel like I belonged here and made me less nervous to talk to new people.

Mack Morris 24MAF

Morris also loved the trip to New York City. While she has no immediate plans to move to the Big Apple, Morris says the experience allowed her to deepen connections with classmates, identify other job opportunities, and learn more about the industry culture.

“You get what you put into the program,” Morris advises future students. “I was shocked. I learned so much and realized how many opportunities I had to deepen my knowledge, expand my network, and try new things. Take advantage of every opportunity.”

This May, hundreds of Goizueta graduates will walk through our doors ready for the workforce. Learn more about the celebration and register for Goizueta’s Commencement activities. Continue to check out the stories of our amazing students throughout April.

Now entering its third year, Goizueta’s Master of Analytical Finance program is already delivering on its promise to launch graduates into powerful and pertinent careers.

Crafted by industry professionals, the program provides unmatched experience and industry know-how through a unique analyst-in-training immersion curriculum.

“The entire curriculum focuses on students having direct experiences with the industry,” says Tom Smith, professor in the practice of finance and academic director of Goizueta’s finance master’s degree. “We place students at the center of a ‘high-touch’ learning environment. They get to interact with industry leaders and engage with markets on a daily basis.”

Professor in the Practice of Finance; Academic Director, Master of Analytical Finance Thomas Smith

On top of its outstanding faculty, the new Finance Lab is a powerful catalyst for immersive, action-based learning unique to the program. Using real-time market data and trading platforms to model, trade, and collaborate on real-world client projects, the Finance Lab enables students to experience the pace of global markets in a professional trading floor setting.

Delivering Desirable Career Outcomes

That immersive and hands-on experience is clearly having a positive impact on graduates’ employability.

Within six months of graduation, 97 percent of graduates had received and accepted job offers. Their job titles ranged from data scientists, tax consultants, and analysts of all kinds.

Graduates landed positions at several well-known and competitive institutions including Bank of America, BlackRock, Deloitte, J.P. Morgan and Co., and Truist, among others.

“Our students are proving that the Master of Analytical Finance program at Goizueta is providing critical training at a critical time,” says Smith. “Students from last year’s cohort are employed at some of the largest and most prestigious finance institutions in the country. Some students are choosing smaller, more intimate engagements, such as boutique funds and family offices, while others have signed on with bigger companies.

Regardless of their path, I couldn’t be prouder of the accomplishments of our first cohort. And this year’s cohort is not disappointing either—our students are already showing their skill set in the market and have accepted job offers. Our program is making a difference in these students’ lives and our students are making a difference in the industry.

Setting up Shop in the South

The global rise of FinTech, of which Atlanta has played a central role, has ensured a steady stream of competitive applicants.

“The Master of Analytical Finance program caught my attention because it perfectly blends finance and technology,” says Krishna Thakkar 23MAF, who leveraged her degree to land her current role as an investment banking analyst.

Slightly over half of 2023 graduates elected to stay in the Southeast, pouring their talent and intellect back into the region of their alma mater. The Northeast and Midatlantic were the second most popular regions, collectively attracting 16 percent of graduates. The remaining graduates scattered across the Midwest, South Central United States and the West Coast. A notable percentage selected jobs in both Asia (seven percent) and Canada (three percent).

“I tell my students that the Master of Analytics Finance program is offering access to excellence,” says Smith. “Every other program says ‘world class professor at a world class institution,’ but how many deliver this? We offer access to the most excellent instruction, access to an excellent facility and lab, hands-on access to industry leaders, and unparalleled access to investment funds that make a difference (such as the Peachtree Minority Venture Fund). Goizueta is excellent, and we are proving it every day!”

The following article on Goizueta’s Master of Analytical Finance degree was originally published on studyinternational.com.

A master’s degree in finance is your passport to a dynamic and data-driven career in finance. This specialized program equips you with advanced quantitative and analytical skills. It enables you to dissect complex financial data, model risk, and forecast market trends with precision. It’s a qualification that can do incredible things for your career prospects. It can open doors to quantitative finance, asset management, and financial technology roles. This makes you a sought-after professional in a rapidly evolving financial landscape. However, do you need years of work experience to embark on this graduate program?

At Emory University’s Goizueta Business School, little or no professional experience is required to join its Master of Analytical Finance. The program is ideal for a novice or one who is looking to further their skills. This 10-month, action-based STEM degree has experiential learning built into its curriculum. Students experience the working life of a Wall Street analyst through four divisions of a top-tier global bank or fund. To ensure a solid foundation, there are boot camps in financial statements, business statistics, and technology/data to kickstart the program.

Hands-on Learning

“The entire curriculum focuses on students having direct experiences with the industry,” says Tom Smith, professor in the practice of finance and academic director of Emory’s finance master’s degree.

The curriculum is built around our practicum experience. That places students at the center of a ‘high-touch’ learning environment. They get to interact with industry leaders and engage with markets on a daily basis.

Students experience the working life of a Wall Street analyst through four divisions of a top-tier global bank or fund. To ensure a solid foundation, there are boot camps in financial statements, business statistics, and technology/data to kickstart the program. Goizueta then gives students access to global markets on a professional trading floor. Students learn and utilize professional tools, data, and trading platforms including Bloomberg, FactSet, Thompsons, Python, R Studio, Barra, and MATLAB.

“We have two ‘jewels’ within the program—our amazing faculty and our state-of-the-art Finance Lab,” says Smith.

Our students work out of the Finance Lab, which includes Bloomberg terminals, for most of their classes. Our faculty are approachable and offer hands-on learning to our students.

Tom Smith

The major difference from other schools is that this master’s degree takes a more hands-on learning approach. “This internship-style graduate program allows us to gain more real-world experience than a typical master’s program,” says Lauren O’Banion 23MAF.

Hands-On Learning

There are four different rotations: global markets, asset portfolios, investment strategies, and a final ‘in practice’ rotation on a global leadership team. “We designed the curriculum to take advantage of the amazing talent within Goizueta’s Finance faculty. Our students are learning from award-winning faculty, including professors Narasimhan JegadeeshKevin Crowley, and Tetyana Balyuk,” says Smith. “I enjoy seeing our finance students learning each quarter. It’s a thrill whenever one of the students stops me in the hall. They want to talk about a project or about the job they just landed. The students are flourishing.”

Global Markets

In the “global markets” rotation, students become part of the Wall Street research team responsible for analyzing connections in real-time and publishing sell-side client research. Not only will they gain expertise in how the global markets function, but an insight into the operations of the financial system, tracking real-world news and events and making connections to theory learnt in the classroom.

Asset Portfolios

With the sales and trading team in the “asset portfolios” rotation, students will gain an understanding of the asset classes that are traded around the world. In this, they get insights into markets and deliverables as well as pitch live trading ideas to their portfolio manager.

Investment Strategies

During the “investment strategies” rotation, students develop and propose a proprietary trading strategy to institutional investors. This is when turning ideas into real investment strategies will become second nature. Emory master’s in finance students can choose to specialize in strategies such as ESG, algorithmic trading, or digital currencies to deliver customer-driven results.

Practice Rotation

The final “practice” rotation is where students put what they have learned into their on-the-job training. As part of a team, they must propose ventures and investment opportunities that can make the world a better place. Using data-driven analysis and innovative blue-sky ideas, their respective teams leverage a firm’s global reach and funding sources to tackle a pressing social, economic, or environmental issue using a strategy that has a positive return on investment.

A Strong Foundation

Each of these rotations takes students deep into the global finance community in the number one city for fintech: Atlanta. Georgia has become a giant in sub-field of technology, with 70% of all transactions on a global scale passing through the state. Goizueta’s strategic location in the global commerce capital adds to the list of opportunities for students with the many fintech industry leaders and Fortune 1000 companies around. Thanks to these connections, students have no shortage of chances to network and collaborate with professionals, clients, and mentors.

In addition to technical finance skills, we want our students in our finance master’s program to learn the soft skills necessary to thrive and grow in the modern finance workplace.

Kirsten Travers-UyHam, associate professor in the practice of finance

The program includes visiting experts, including ESG-impact specialists, who give talks and will listen to pitches of the investment proposal to a panel of respected corporate leaders.

With access to experts, cutting-edge systems, and real-world projects, Goizueta master’s in finance students gain a wealth of experience to launch their careers in all the right ways. This master’s in finance helps students earn professional licensing, including Bloomberg BMC, SIE (Series 7 preview), and CFA prep, as well. As an unmatched experience and insight into the world of finance, this Goizueta program ensures every student evolves from a beginner in this field into a graduate set to excel in areas such as sales and trading, investment management, fintech, and investment banking.

“Our students are receiving employment across the finance spectrum. The quality of jobs that these students have secured has impressed me,” says Smith. “In fact, several of our current students have already secured employment for next year and we’ve just finished our first quarter of classes. Our students are very employable.”

As a first generation student, Natalia Rosas-Villeda 23MAF understands the power of a degree. Rosas-Villeda began her college career at Agnes Scott College with an interest in public health, but soon discovered she wanted to learn more about the quantitative side of the field. That’s what led her just down the road to Emory’s Goizueta Business School. Rosas-Villeda quickly learned about the Master of Analytical Finance program, which provides scholarships for women moving into the finance sector. “Access to scholarships and funds can really make or break whether you will be able to go to college,” Rosas-Villeda says. “If it wasn’t for the Golden Door Scholarship for undergrad and Business Fund for Excellence for grad school, I wouldn’t have the very valuable education and personal success I do today.”

Goizueta Master in Analytical Finance graduate Natalia Rosas Villeda
Natalia Rosas Villeda

Because of her scholarship, Rosas-Villeda was able to fully immerse herself in the Master of Analytical Finance program, including serving as a social chair, admissions ambassador, and a student blogger for Voice of Goizueta. She represented Goizueta in the 2nd Annual Chartered Financial Analyst Atlanta Society Ethics Challenge where her team triumphed in first place.

While she continued to find success at Goizueta, Rosas-Villeda also struggled with imposter syndrome. As a woman who immigrated from Mexico, she couldn’t help feeling that so many others deserved this success just as much as she did. However, Rosas-Villeda says she now looks at her success as an opportunity to set an example for those she hopes will follow in her footsteps.

To be going forward with my education and a career and showing younger women and girls that look like me and who have the same background that it’s okay to put yourself first is a very rewarding experience. I feel like my sacrifices and hard work have paid off.

Natalia Rosas-Villeda

Rosas-Villeda had to overcome yet another obstacle after suffering a mild traumatic brain injury while snowboarding in Colorado. Her accident led to a battle with post-concussive syndrome accompanied by high anxiety. She tried to find therapeutic exercises that fit her tight schedule and rested as much as she could―but she continued to struggle with mental exhaustion. Rosas-Villeda worked with Emory Counseling and Psychological Services and a therapist two to three times a week during her recovery. Rosas-Villeda credits the tremendous support system at Emory for helping her complete her program, graduate, and begin her career as a healthcare consultant at accounting firm PYA.

“It was definitely a huge setback for me at that age and point in life,” she says. “But whatever I could do before, I know I can learn how to do even better, and that’s what I’m working on now. One thing that it taught me was to tell people when you need help and be okay with your vulnerability when you’re in a position like that,” Rosas-Villeda says. “Being mindful and taking a step away from the craziness of life, I learned how to enjoy things in the moment and save the problems of the future for the future.”
